freezing caused by Direct-X

ello,

I have recently gone over to SSD from HDD and am using a Crucial M4 500GB currently. Everything is running from my SSD.

I re-installed WIN 7 and updated all the drivers for my motherboard including the BIOS.

I then installed the latest Nvidia driver (not long after going over to the SSD) and kept having problems with Direct-X crashing. BF3 just freezes. I de-installed the latest Nvidia driver and re-installed 310.93 driver knowing that that had worked with my HDD.

Anyway, I'm still getting the same freezing problem. It is not an actual BSOD but the game just freezes and I have to go into CTRL-ALT-DEL to see that there is a problem with Direct-X. No actual error message is given.

Another clue as to what is happening is that after the freeze nothing in my Google browser will load up. I have to shut down the Google browser and restart.

I don't have this problem when running from my HDD, only SSD.

How can I go about fixing this please.

Nevica

To be honest, I am not absolutely sure.

You have suggested I download Direct X 9.

What about Direct X 11 which is what I am running. Surely, no-one uses Direct X 9.

It will download important DirectX runtime libraries that function across the board.
Don't let the name fool you. Installing this is crucial to nearly every Windows installation.

Just give it a shot and tell me how you go. It's better for me to understand what your issue is after you have ran and installed that.

Ok, I'll download this. But I'm not in front of the computer so I can only do this in a few hours time.

Are there any other tests I can do?

I am assuming you have mentioned in your first post that this is occurring on a Windows installation on the SSD, and not on the other disk.

Well, if you're in the mood for more and installing the DirectX runtime files hasn't done anything for you, then I have a few more suggestions:

If BF3 is not the only DirectX-based game that crashes, do the following, testing the game in between each completed process; restart where necessary:

  • Do a driver sweep and then/or clean install the latest WHQL NVIDIA drivers.
  • Run error checking on the SSD. Windows Key+E > Right click your SSD > Tools tab

If BF3 is the only DirectX-based game that crashes, reinstall BF3.

Yes, I agree. Rather unusual error since its a fresh install of WIN 7 and the games software + Nvidia software. Because it's a new install of WIN 7 it might be that all the updates have not been installed!

It doesn't seem unusual to me. It seems like DirectX isn't entirely installed—I run in to this issue and other similar issues every time I re-install because I often forget to install the DirectX runtime libraries. Well, in the distant past.

NVIDIA is not responsible for installing them, and the fact that you haven't done Windows Updates supports this possibility too!
Time will tell, anyway.

Hello,

Here is what I have done.

1. Downloaded Direct-X 9 as you suggested. It reports that I don't need to install drivers as these drivers are already installed.

2. Checked I have all windows updates.

3. Checked that I have the latest firmware for the SSD.

4. Installed the latest Nvidia drivers.

So far no freezes!!
