Solved Getting odd message on windows 7 startup

hey guys , im getting this message when i start up
"setting up personalized settings for web platform customizations"
is that normal?
in use windows 7 32 bit

If it doesn't complete then boot into Safe Mode to see if it will then. Give it plenty of time.

If that fails try a Clean Boot: Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7

And if that fails try System Restore to before the last updates, as far back as you need to go. Then install Updates singly to isolate the problem.

hey bud , thanks for your sugestion
it does complete boot, and that message doesnt last long (couple of seconds) but why is it there?
btw i update windows all the time
(the next pc i get im going for unbuntu as $300+ of windows 7 is a joke)

It could be caused by several things but most likely WIndows Update.

The solution for failed updates is to System Restore to before the updates and reinstall singly. Most times that is enough.

If this is preinstalled Win7 from a factory OEM PC then you have an inferior install to begin with so I'd do what most tech enthusiasts do and Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7.

At the minimum I'd Clean Up Factory Bloatware

Otherwise besides the steps given I'd go over your install using the Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7 which will find and fix most problems.

Woke up this morning to same problem after overnight MS "update"

I woke up this morning and have the IDENTICAL problem.

I am 100% sure it was because one of those 3 a.m. Microsoft "upgrades" where they haven't worked out the bugs (as an aside I've found everything Microsoft getting more and more bugs and have dealt with each issue by switching to things Google makes - which is sad because I grew up idolizing Bill Gates and Microsoft (MS)). I even bought a computer w/ MS's latest operating system and it's collecting dust because I cannot figure out how the tiles they created works.

I wish MS would recognize the issue as I'm assuming hundreds of people are having this same problem, and tell us all a SIMPLE solution (as I am forced to use my back up computer w/ a Google operating system).

My computer works fine in Safe Mode - but that's an annoying screen to work in.

PLEASE Microsoft - you've made enough money off selling us all software - give us a FREE tech phone # we can call to work thru this problem ASAP. If I have to go out & buy a new computer because of this I will NEVER use an MS OS again - you burn so much goodwill with these continuous goofs. At the same time I'm wondering if I'm being unreasonable and us users shouldn't just accept losing time learning how to be techies and solve these problems - is it safe to assume that no company in the world could do better than Microsoft is?

So instead of spending my evening with my family, I will try to follow the solutions above and figure out how to solve this - but if anyone can tell me exactly which of the 3 suggestions actually solves the problem that would be awesome.

We are not MS. We are an independent tech forums.

Windows Updates problems are one in a million. The solution for failed updates is to System Restore to before the updates and reinstall singly. Most times that is enough.

System Restore

Or using Win7 DVD or System Repair Disk
access it in System Recovery Options

All better with a simple system restore

GregRocker was 100% correct - all I needed to do was a system restore -which I did as follows:

1) Started the computer while tapping the F8 key
2) Chose the "safe mode" option
3) Opened the Start Menu, and typed: rstrui.exe in the search box, and pressed Enter and it took me directly to the system restore option
4) I selected the latest update called something like "Windows Critical Update" that was done at 3 a.m. this morning
5) I then followed the next few prompts so that my computer would restore to it's state JUST BEFORE the update
6) Setback and drank a beer - less than 5 minutes later (before I could finish beer) my laptop worked perfectly w/ no signs of a malfunction.

I did an additional 'shut down' and start up to make sure everything is back to 'normal' and it is.

Greg - YOU ROCK (no pun intended).

I unfortunately don't have the patience or time to install each part of the update individually - so how can I prevent any future middle of the night updates?

Unfortunately you can't do without Win7 updates due to how heavy the threat level is to its Security. So I'd just let them run again at a time when you have to monitor them and they almost always will install correctly.

If not open a thread in our Updates forum where they specialize it sorting these. Of course it's always better if you can narrow it down first by installing in smaller groups or singly to isolate the problem update. But most times when that's done they all install ok anyway.

Same problem this morning but worse

I didn't know how to turn off the auto updates so it updated again.

I tried to do a system restore but not it is saying: "No restore points have been created on your computer's system drive. To create a restore point open System Protection."

Am I screwed now?

Unfortunately I have a day from hell & can't troubleshoot unless it's easy - and the computer is my lifeline for work.

There must be other issues since Updates always set a Restore Point.

Try running it from System Recovery Options, along with Startup Repair if necessary.

Establish a Clean Boot, run a Malwarebytes scan, check the logs, system resources from Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7
