Solved Gfx slow and then BSOD.

Did you run with the RAM timings set in manual, unganged, Command Rate 2T, VDDNB voltage 1.200v, and both RAM cards installed?
The 'ganged' mode may have caused the crash.
Yes, I did. I suppose I should retest without ganged mode.

What is the DRAM voltage in BIOS?
Auto, although I believe the RAM defaults it to 1.4v?

Your computer is overheating. If you let it sit it will power back up but it will only happen again when you leave it on for a while. Everytime you open something your computer uses more power. Try adding heat sink paste to your processor fan. I had the same problem. When your framerates fall its overheating look at some youtube videos on it

Yes, test it in 'unganged' mode first with both RAM cards installed.

The CPUZ shows default DRAM voltage of 1.50v.

Check it it BIOS, if it doesn't show you a voltage number, then change it to 'Manual' and if needed increase it by the smallest amount possible.
If the above doesn't work then change it to 1.55v.

Your temps in Speed Fan, assuming the system was at idle, looks fine.

Get Core Temp and check it under full load with Prime95, use the tourture test.

CPU - Stress Test with Prime95

Prime95, tourture test, is also a good way to test the RAM.

Yeah, I have so many fans on this build it's almost unnecessary, I doubt it would overheat. The few times that I have monitored temps (during a prime95 torture test, mainly) my CPU was holding in the mid 40s celsius with a 10% processor overclock.

Although that was with the 212+ whereas I'm now using the stock fan (reverted the OC for this fan).

I will retest in unganged tomorrow morning, if it BSOD's I'll up the VDDNB voltage to 1.24v and then if that doesn't work, the DRAM to 1.55v.

No idea how to even check Northbridge temps (although you can take a look at the speedfan screenshots a couple posts ago if you haven't already).

Also, the RAM voltage indeed defaults to 1.5v (manufacturer's site).

AMD CPUs usually run cool, even with stock coolers.
It's worth checking again just to be sure.
A loose CPU cooler or paste issues can cause high temps.

The unganged setting and the VDDNB voltage bump should solve the RAM issues.
This is likely the cause of the crashes but, only testing will tell.

What about the north bridge? it's what always cooks on my systems.

Definitely on 775 socket mobos. If your OC'ing a NB fan is a good idea.

On Intel i-series and the later AMD CPUs the memory controller is integrated in the CPU. AMD NB is for the PCIe. They 'usually' run cool.

No idea how to even check Northbridge temps (although you can take a look at the speedfan screenshots a couple posts ago if you haven't already).

Also, the RAM voltage indeed defaults to 1.5v (manufacturer's site).

For a quick check on the NB temps, after its been running hard for a while, open the case and see if you can hold your finger on the NB heat sink.
This will let you know if you need to check it further.

Check the RAM voltage in BIOS when you get a chance, better to be sure.

Let us know the results.

I have just retested the VDDNB voltage bump with no success, increased it to 1.2375 (increments of 0.0125) still BSOD'd.

Haven't been able to try the DRAM voltage change because after chain blue screening the system becomes difficult to boot consistently.

On my most recent attempt I smelled something melting so I immediately powered it down and unplugged it. Was unable to locate the source of the smell for sure, but my best guess is CPU? Last time this happened it was my PSU dying which then surged the motherboard shortly afterward, so I'm hesitant to continue.

Edit: When trying to boot, the computer does 1 long beep followed by 2 short beeps, Conventional/Extended Memory Failure? AMI BIOS, but it doesn't list a meaning for 1 long 2 short. Have tried reseating the RAM twice, once just a reseat, second moving it to different slots, still same problem. Running just one stick of ram (unsurprisingly) gives the same result.

Seems to me that a part has gotten fried. Could potentially be the motherboard, the CPU, or the RAM. Although, the RAM is very unlikely.

I plan on grabbing a spare mobo and RAM from best buy today to diagnose the problem.

A burning smell is never good.

Swapping the mobo and ram are the best way to trouble shoot at this stage.

Could be the memory controller going, which means the CPU.

Let us know the results.

Been having trouble with my internet connection, haven't been able to access this site for a while.

Next step is going to be to RMA the mobo and pray it's not the CPU that's bad.

My worry is not that the CPU is bad, my worry is that I've messed up the memory controller while trying to get the full 4 gb to work.

Although now that I think about it, even if that was the case the motherboard would have to be defective as well otherwise there would be no explanation as to why it wouldn't have just worked in the first place.

Your memory controller is intergrated in the CPU, so equals bad CPU.

Have you checked for mobo grounding points?
Maybe too late but would be good to know for your next mobo.

It's common for 4GB RAM and 2GB RAM cards to need adjustments to run stable. Defaults are set for the average users RAM, 2-4GB with 1GB cards. If the default settings were higher then many more people might be having issues.

Let us know your status.

Have you checked for mobo grounding points?
Maybe too late but would be good to know for your next mobo.

Please explain further. The motherboard was installed using all matching standoff points.

That is the first thing to check.

Check for any wires running behind the mobo, discoloration or of coarse burn marks, anything coming through the back of the mobo mounting plate.

So first off: Supermassive necro.

I eventually tried my rig's CPU in my brother's motherboard, run perfectly stable. I figured out at this point it was almost definitely a motherboard problem, so I RMA'd it to ASUS (after a lot of time passed).

I just rebuilt the rig with the fixed motherboard (I assume it's the same one, asus didn't say if the replaced it or what). After a couple hours of gaming, had a random reboot. Ran Memtest over night (7 hours, no errors at all).

After a bit more gaming, another reboot. Finished off what I was doing and reinstalled the operating system fresh. Played another couple hours, computer completely locked up, had to force a reboot.

I can say for certain that it's not overheating, unless the computer is perceiving the temps wrong, as the CPU sits at 40 deg full load, and GPU at 70 deg full loaded.

Edit: At this point I'm getting rather frustrated with ASUS' apparently terrible RMA service. I'm sure it would help a lot if they could tell me if they actually REPLACED the board. I feel like just calling in and demanding a refund.

Sorry to hear your still having issues.

No dump files in your zip folder.

Looks like you are not set up to generate the mini dumps.

To ensure minidumps are enabled:
Go to Start, in the Search Box type: sysdm.cpl, press Enter.
Under the Advanced tab, click on the Startup and Recovery Settings... button.
Ensure that Automatically restart is unchecked.
Under the Write Debugging Information header select Small memory dump (256 kB) in the dropdown box (the 256kb varies).
Ensure that the Small Dump Directory is listed as %systemroot%\Minidump.
OK your way out.
Reboot if changes have been made.

The other files gives some information.

Under "Problem Devices' in your System Information
Not Available ACPI\ATK0110\1010110 The drivers for this device are not installed.
Multimedia Audio Controller PCI\VEN_13F6&DEV_0111&SUBSYS_011113F6&REV_10\4&2966AB86&0&28A4 The drivers for this device are not installed.
And in 'Windows error Reporting: PNP driver not found.

Check Device Manager for any yellow triangles, then check for drivers for anything that is flagged.

Windows start button :orb: right click 'Computer', click 'Manage', on the left click 'Device Manager'.

Check that all you drivers are up to date, do not use the CD that came with the motherboard, go to the Asus motherboard site and get them there.
