Going insane about write protected folders

Hey,

I'm not a regular Windows users so please pardon if I missed something obvious.

I have a folder that is write protected. I have a software that needs it to not be write protected while running an update process. So it complains and asks me to remove this protection and restart.
I right-click on the folder, untick the little box and click OK, silly enough thinking this would actually work, which it didn't.
So, I dig a little deeper and find talks about having to change the ownership. So I go to the root (this is on an external drive) and set ownership to my users. I also set Everyone to have full access, just to be sure.
The ownership changes, I head back to the folder and try to remove the write protection again, but no luck.
I move the folder to the root, incase there's a top-folder that's causing the problem and repeat. No luck.
I try this little addon, but till no luck.

I'm going crazy here. How hard can it be to actually remove a bloody write protection...

Running Windows 7 x64.

Ok, thanks for your help.

It seems that my folder is "undetermined" and not write proteced. If try setting it to write protected all the files change, but it still calls in undetermined. And setting it back again removes it from the files but folder remains the same.

Only problem is, my app still says it's in a write protected folder...

Can you copy and past the contents and put in a new folder?
