Grand Theft Auto 4 - Install Wont Start

The install won't start because it says it is incompatible with %P. I'm guessing that means Windows 7. If anyone has found a workaround let me know.

Crashes in compatibility mode every time I try by the way.

Did you *install* it in compatibility mode? I went to the CD and made sure the system was using compatibility mode for the installer and the autorun executables, just to be safe.

I had no issues before in 6801 with GTA IV, but I'll give it a shot here on build 7000 - several things have changed and somethings that worked before are now not working as well (If at all).

I had the compatibility mode enabled. I attempted Windows XP Compatibility and then Vista after that failed. They both ended up failing. What I have been reading is GTA4 install stopped working because of something to do with the Securom Protection since build 6956 I believe it was which makes me all the more pissed off.

Nearly there, trying with XP compatibility mode.



It was going to well after inserting disc 1 again it was finishing the installation and I got this message.



I skipped that part and and it said the installation was complete but once I run the Game I got this error message.

OK I have now been able to find a way to play and this how I did it.

1. To install the game you have to do it with XP compatibility mode.
Note: you will have some issues at the end of the installation, just ignore and finalize the install.

2. Go to the disc and open and go to this file and install.



2. Now go to the disc and select this file and install it.



3. Download the Games for Windows Live Update http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=98609

If you try to run the game before you install the update you should be prompted to install it before you are able to play.

4. Once you have installed the update you then have to turn off any compatibility modes that you may have on as I found out, with XP mode I was told that I needed service Pack 3 and in Vista Mode I was told I needed service pack 1 so I unchecked it and ran as Administrator anyway.

5. Start the game enter your live ID and your game key and then you should be able to play.

Does GTA4 run any better in Windows 7 than Vista? In Vista I get all kinds of wierd problems with disappearing textures and LOD pop-ins.

I was playing for about an hour or so and I had no problems.

I will try installing GTA4 again then. Hopefully it will work this time around. I will also post some benchmarks if I get it running to show performance in Windows 7 relative to XP. I couldn't benchmark on Vista very well because it only worked on minimum settings while in XP I could crank the settings up with no negatives.

Weird, Grim - I installed it with Vista compatibility in build 7000 x86 and it worked just fine - all I had to do was install GFWL 1.2....

Well to tell you the truth i know that now, but at the time I was trying everything, so wasn't quite sure which part made it work so I just explained everything I did so I had a guarantee that it would work for everyone else.

The only problem that i have now with gta4 is that when i am using alt+tab the game stops working and it's not responding.
Do you guys have that problem?

Yep but I think it does that in any OS, some games just don't like it when you do that.

Yeah in vista also i had that problem too but sometimes not too often.
In 7 it happens everytime

And *why* would you be Alt-Tabbing again?

I personally alt-tab when I go to look up cheats or I'm modding certain games or something of the sort.

Although I wouldn't be alt-tabbing out of GTA 4... But I do in games like Warhammer Online and Garry's Mod.
