Has anyone successfully got Outlook Express working in Windows 7?

Yeah, I know the workaround. Virtual XP with Outlook Express, move the shortcut to the all users start menu in XP and I can use it "standalone" in 7. The problem is that when you click any links via this method, they open in the virtual mode's browser, which is really laggy for videos and scrolling through text. Also, because I'm on a system with only 2gb of ram, I'd like to keep the resources reserved for other applications.

I've copied the Outlook Express folder from virtual XP to the same path in Windows 7. When I run msimn.exe, I get this error:

Outlook Express could not be started because MSOE.DLL could not be loaded.

I do not know if its even possible to make this work, but if it is just a question of registering missing .DLLs, hope is given. Windows Live mail is an awful, awful mail client. I tried for a week to get used to it and it's just a complete pile of crap.

Anyone tired this with or without success?

This particular machine is 32 bit Windows 7 Pro.

I dont have the answer to your question, but why bother with a none supported old email client. There are many great ones to chose from

Who knows. Probably the same reason I drive old, unsupported vehicles?

I'm well aware of other e-mail client options. If anyone has any information on this particular problem, I welcome it.

You might want to consider "Thunderbird". When combined with the "Lightning" add-on, for the calendar functions, it is very similar to Outlook express.

While I don't use any of the live services I have heard that Live mail is also similar to Outlook express.

There is a tutorial about reinstating Windows Mail (from Vista and almost installed on Windows 7): http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/5481-windows-mail.html but it potentially could inadvertantly fail due to some future update to Windows 7. Poppa Bear (the author) and I tried it for a while but finally decided to give Windows Live Mail a good try. WLM has the basic functionality of OE and WM buried under a lot of new features. But it is possibe to avoid the new stuff and even avoid its association with a "windows live" account by not signing in when using the program. It's part of a suite of free programs for Windows 7 called Windows Live Essentials. You can choose to download them one at a time through the small installer file.
