Hello all, my first thread.
Simple question, has microsoft ended activation for win 7 in the uk?

I've installed a new hard drive but I can not get the microsoft server to accept the coa details (tried with 5 or 6 different coa stckers).
I have re wipped the hard drive and installed win 7 pro a second time, but with the exact same resault.

0x80072f8f, as we know we have to get the time and date exact in the motherboard bios and in windows or we get this message. But when I open the Network and sharing center/ troubleshoot problems / internet connections / trouble shoot connection - I get this message:
"Windows couldn't automaticly detect this networks proxy settings".

If we try to activate win xp we get the exact same as the above, as Microsoft activation has been turned off for xp.

I suspect that auto online activation for Vista might have ended, but not yet for win7, as far as I know.

If that is a "system builder" key, you should in theory only need to ring if a different machine....

type slui 4 in run box for the free phone no.

I activated vista a couple of months ago by by phone. It doesn't take long.

The last 2 times that I did a clean re-install of Windows 7 Professional SP1 64-bit in 2 Dell OptiPlex 780 minitowers that originally came with that same Windows version, Microsoft failed to accept and validate their OEM product key, so I had to use another procedure.

What are you trying to say? Did you try phone activation?

Thank you for the quick reply.

I have been resisting the erge to use another procedure, but I'm guessing that it maybe the only way.
I'm going to drag the old laptop out and try with that. Thinking about it I should have done that before posting, ho hum.

I've always used the standard on-line method to activate Windows 7.
It's worked fine in the past, but it doesn't seem to now.
I've never called Microsoft by phone to do an activation.
I see no point in starting to do it now.

I recently had to activate a copy of 2008 r2 using the same command that siw2 posted. I don't know if server activation has been turned off but if it fails you are stuck with either the phone activation (which takes less than 10 minutes), a rearm, continually reinstalling, or hacking the activation. We can't help you with that. You can try a rearm but that'll eventually require a reinstall. How to use Windows 7 for free for 120 days, legally | Ars Technica

I am curious why there is an aversion to phone activation.

It is free and quite quick.

Hi

OH dear,

you have a retail motherboard, American megatrends, whilst you are trying to use an OEM COA product key. It will work on a Dell/HP etc machine
It also requires a SLIC table, which yours does not have these are embedded during manufacture by the OEM.

As was mentioned earlier, either a System builder or Retail key are the only type that will activate this comp

As torchwood posted, it reports no slic table. Therefore you need to use either system builder or retail key.

If you have one from another machine you are no longer using, or alternatively buy one. Not sure how easy it is to buy reliable single win 7 nowadays.
They have them at specialist desktop assemblers, but I am not sure they will sell them to you separately.

If you don't mind win10 retail, it can be had for $39.99

Hi,

If there was an activation exploit on the old HDD, then those keys would have worked.

MS has identified it as a non genuine system, but is not yet reporting it as such as your still in the 30 day grace period.

Thanks for your help guys, as on line activation has been turned off I'm going to try a modem.
If that doesn't work I'll keep my eyes open for a system builder disk and coa, and activate by phone.

Before I go, if I can pick your brains further.
With a laptop, we shove the disk in - install windows, and activation happens over the internet without us noticing, or does it just nullify the activation during the install?

Hi

OEM's original key in use - Is self-activating
Computers Using a OEM COA key goes to MS servers
All Retail/System builder keys are validated against MS Servers

ON LINE ACTIVATION/VALIDATION HAS NOT BEEN TURNED OFF

it actually occurs everytime you turn your comp on
