Hi,
With all the updates I show there are 350 updates
Trying to load that many updates many are likely to fail to install
kb3125574 makes it easier

But the order is a tad different
1st kb3020369-x64
2nd kb3125574-x64
3rd kb3172605-x64
windows update

Thrash, how have you got 350 updates??

The most I have had is around 220, even on a clean install I don't get anywhere near 350.

Or are you including MS Office and .NET updates too?

I got stalled trying to turn off Windows Update, although I went on to reboot and it looks like Windows Update is not running and is internet connections are disabled. The following images have the results of this part:



The STOP utility went into an execution mode [green bar expansion] and then, at completion, it issued the error 1053 message shown. Hit OK and rebooted.

I will now do the indicated updates, reboot, and see if it updates works and how the listed updates changes. Will let you know of course.

As for the present update status of my Windows, restored from an 8/01/16 system image backup, it shows 7/20/16 as the most recent, screen shot as follows:

If the windows update service stalls when trying to stop, a reboot usually does the trick. You should be able to successfully stop the service after that.

Yes office 2007 and net 4.6.1
332 installed and 19 not installed = 351 total pretty much the same on 3 machines.

Mixed Results

I seem to be able to do manual updates now (using your recommendations), however using the Windows Update utility from Control Panel has not worked yet. Specifics as follows.

KB3020369 already installed.JPG. Not surprised inasmuch as I was current to July 20, 2016.



Installed KB3172605 Successfully [verified]



The fix did restore Check for Updates and I executed the check. It runs (10-15 min), finds 40 updates, but fails to install. No reason given.

I will think on this over night and regroup in the morning. I really need to install the third update, KB3125574 and then see what it looks like.

What is interesting is that manually, it will install downloaded updates, and the Control Panel search will find updates, but won't install them. All said, at least this way I can get updates, albeit less conveniently.

Okay use Option 3 here,
Windows Update - Reset

Are you trying to install all updates at once? That will always result in some failed updates on a clean install.

The way I do it on my systems and VM's:

Install Windows security updates

Reboot

Check for updates

Install remaining important updates

Reboot

Check for updates

Install .NET Framework security updates

Reboot

Check for updates

Pick and Install recommended/optional updates + IE updates

It takes a lot of patience though! Do not attempt if you're of a nervous disposition! :roflmao:

The easier option, just install the convenience rollup as ThrashZone says. You'll still need to install any updates issued after April though.

Possibly Solved ... let's see how well it goes now

To all:

I have what appears to be success to report.

Before trying "Option 3" (per ThashZone last night), I did the following with outcome as noted:
- Reestablished internet connection; [check for updates already turned back on]
- Checked for Updates: Same list of 40 updates to be installed (that failed before) appear.
This time installaing > "Preparing to Install" > "Creating restore point" > "Installing updates" (1 thru 23).
- Restart  BlueScreen!
BAD_POOL_HEADER
1st Time…Restart (no new hardware)
....
***STOP
Crash dump
- Turned off computer >>>> Restarted
 “Applying Updates” (fast, paused at @30862 of 30862 Registry/…) > AutoRestart >  Reconfiguring
- Finished; it looks normal.

Now look to see what installed.

The Window section shows 10 of the 11 in re recommended (one not installed was a malicious software removal tool) with today's date (10/08/2016) as installed:


The Office section shows a long list of new updates with no correlation with earlier recommendations.



So it looks to me at this point that I am at least up to date.

I will watch things for a few days and, if all still works as expected, report my problems as SOLVED and close out the thread. However, until then I give thanks to all of you that helped me clear up my problems with Windows 7. I especially thank Torchwood and Ranger4 (re: MGADiag) for getting rid of the Windows not genuine popup and the faulty intel drivers. Likewise I thank Brds7t7 and ThrashZone for the downloads and helping me to get Windows Update working again.

Being new to the Windows 7 Foum, I must say how impressed I am with the functionality of the forum and its tools, the willing helpfulness of its members, the excellent and clear tutorials and resources therein, and the international scope of the forum.

Again, I will see how well things work for a few days and then "Mark this thread as solved". And thanks to you all,

Genuine Windows popup and Windows Update problems are solved

To all
I am pleased to report that my Genuine Windows popup and Windows Update problems are solved. It is well over a week now without the popups and, for the second time, last night, Windows automatically updated the system again. Also, my weekly automatic backups are current. The only remaining problems from my system restoration (2 DVD drives; one cannot be seen at all and the other cannot be written to) seem to be a hardware issue and, if this turns out to be ‘system’ problem after all, I will open another thread.

Once again, I give thanks to all of you that helped me, particularly Torchwood and Ranger4 in ridding of the popup and also to Brds7t7 and ThrashZone in getting Windows Update working again. And, overall, I must also say again how impressed by and pleased with the Windows 7 Forum.
I mark this thread a solved!
