I am currently "working in" basic Safe Mode.

The other day my computer suddenly froze and took longer than usual to shut down.

The next day it took a long time to boot up and then failed to find windows and gave me the option to Restore Windows. That attempt failed as well since it said it could not locate Windows or something. I did not recall the actual message.

I ignored it and tried booting it again and was able to get into Safe Mode and have been there ever since backing up files.

I cannot locate an installation disk and do not think my laptop shipped with an installation DVD, just a box with a serial #.

And I cannot locate a boot disk for this and never created a system image and did not save any restore points so I cannot set it to the last known good setting from Safe Mode. (I know, I know.)

I do not want to lose my settings or start over again with a fresh install. I am hoping to restore windows and get back to the way I had things.

What would you do next?

I think the Windows ISO files that I can download from the MS site is not for repairing Windows but for reinstalling it and what I really need is a boot disk. Right?

If so, can I use any Win 7 version boot disk, even if it's not for Pro?
