can someone clear this up for me or tell me what im doing wrong

im trying to make a mini dump so i can upload it

i have installed the 64bit non itanium debugger, made it the handler succesfully at the cmd prompt in admin mode and have set the file symbol path to

SRV*C:\SymCache*http://msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols

is that all i should need to do??

all my freezes have been hard lockups and everytime i have gone back into the debugger and clicked open crash dump i cant find one

FYI

im running 64bit pro and i have debugger installed at c:\debugger

am idoing something wrong or do i not get a dumpfile from a hard lockup??

and to top all this i have just found out abit dont make motherboards anymore so no win 7 drivers for me!!

thanks once again

Have rep for being methodical, and for highlighting something that I should add to the "BSOD analysis" walkthrough.

Namely, "this doesn't work for OS hangs" :(

A minidump is generated in response to something in the OS or a kernel-mode driver pressing the panic button by calling the KeBugCheckEx function. A complete hang/lockup is fundamentally different because nobody is panicking in that way - either a driver has done something to make the OS unresponsive (but still happy), or the hardware itself is making it impossible to continue operating.

It's possible to purposefully trigger a BSOD, and thus generate a memory dump at (almost) any time, but for reasons difficult to explain succinctly that is not a viable means of troubleshooting over a web forum. (It is, however, precisely how they troubleshoot lockups on big server systems worth the effort.)

Can you describe the history and circumstances of your lockups in a bit more detail?

*sigh* I preferred Abit boards myself. Now I've got a P35Pro sitting here looking slightly sad because (suspected) bugs in its BIOS won't allow for VT to stay consistently enabled. Every time I restart, I have to go through the rigmarole of re-enabling virtualisation support in the BIOS. But enough about my woes...

thanks for pointing that out, dont i look stupid now :o

it boots ok and is normally fine looking through my computer etc, but then as soon as i go on the net it will crash within 3-5 minutes

would you recommend a new graphics card (i have radeon x1650 pro) or motherboard or both? and do you know if any mobo's are marked 7 compatable yet?

thanks for the speedy reply

sorry to hear about your mobo btw

No, in fact you look rather clever, because that is by far the most sophisticated method to troubleshoot a lockup, and you seem to have arrived there instinctively. Unfortunately, the complexity of the procedure prevents its use for our purposes here, and it's necessary to do some trial-and-error stuff instead.

it boots ok and is normally fine looking through my computer etc, but then as soon as i go on the net it will crash within 3-5 minutes

Does it happen if you test in [safe mode + net]? Press F8 at startup to get there.

Are the NIC drivers up-to-date?

Does it still happen if you temporarily uninstall (disabling is not good enough) all anti-virus and 3rd-party firewall utilities?

would you recommend a new graphics card (i have radeon x1650 pro) or motherboard or both? and do you know if any mobo's are marked 7 compatable yet?

There's no particular reason, yet, to suspect a hardware fault. I'd recommend doing some testing first, along the lines of the suggestions above. Answers to those questions may lead to additional troubleshooting options.

sorry to hear about your mobo btw

*sniff* Thanks!
