Help - Explorer Window Closes ...

... every time I clik on any folder's 'File' menu button. It also closes all explorer windows if more than one is open and these also happen if I r-clik anywhere inside an explorer window (All other buttons Edit View Tools Help are ok). This happens on all explorer folder windows that I navigate to. The attached image pop-up appears and all open explorer windows close when 'ok' is cliked. I have never seen it before and do not know what it means.

Guard pages for the stack are typically used to detect when more memory should be allocated for the stack. Usually temporary variables that only live during the run of a function are created on the stack.

Have you rebooted the machine since this error? If not I would reboot and see what happens.
Otherwise I would try is a restore point if you have one available.

^ Thank you for reply. Here is an update that I had planned to post prior to this reply, but I had to attend to some business and was unable to until now :

Update : I ran the system file checker scan utility (sfc /scannow) and when finished it said to re-start for effect. The problem has not returned as of this post. However, I also recall from past posts here that running this utility 'several times' is advised. I ran it two more times. Upon finish it did not request a re-start but both times it did report errors found that it could not fix and to view a 'CBS.log' file. Naturally, this file is all 'geek-speak' to me (and I should have left well enough alone). I post it as an attachment here for someone to trouble-shoot. Advice?

Run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth from a Elevated Command Prompt then run sfc /scannow again.

My fault, I'm getting Windows 7 confused with Windows 8. DISM is for Windows 8, SURT is for Windows 7 and older.

Thx Rich. I visited the surt link you provided. It seems to me that it is some kind of windows update/service pack installation-related utility. Do you suspect that the sfc scan log file indicates problems of this nature? I have run error-free sfc scans before. Since then, I have not installed a service pack and the only update is the recent Silverlight and it installed without incident. In fact, I have never had an unsuccessful windows update install.

My understanding is that like DISM, it repairs the Component Store which is used by SFC to replace missing or corrupted files. The Component Store is maintained by the OS and Windows Updates. When any of it gets corrupted, SFC can't use it's files to repair damage.

Worth a try, won't hurt anything.

OK - I did the SURT thing. This is a new and strange one to me. I'm sure I followed the steps correctly. I ran sfc afterwards. Unfixable errors indicated. Log is attached

All the errors I see in the CBS.log file are for windows update collections it couldn't find. Are you seeing other things?

This issue returned a few days or so after the OP. I was unable to re-visit until now. I have done several re-boots since and a system restore point to a time prior is not available. I have updated the OP to include an additional anomaly. Any other advice is welcome.

I can't find the Registry Key for items in the Explorer Background Right Click Menu. But I suspect there is something funky there. If you right click Explorer background and they all close it could be that something isn't handling the menu creation correctly. For example a recursive loop that eats up all the stack, causing the guard page message.

I anyone knows the Explorer Background Context Menu Key could you post it?

thx M_A - I do have a system 'tweak' in place that hides an explorer tool bar and appears upon mouse-hover (I recall I learned of it at this site). It's the toolbar that has 'Organize', 'Burn', 'New Folder' etc. It does jitter a lot if I move the cursor across this area and have to be really delicate if I want to select one of those items. Although this has not been an issue in the past I mention it here in case there is relevance to this problem. In any case, I prefer to disable it but cannot recall how I did it in the first place.

thx Callender for the lead. That was the mod. I 'undid' the mod, restarted and the explorer windows are restored. However, as I suspected, it does not resolve this issue.
