Here is the problem. I have a Canon scanner 4200F, in setting it up, it asks to 'Link scanned image to a source.' This source will then automatically open the scanned image for preview and is necessary to scan. When I try to link it to a program, it needs a [*.exe] extension. So I want to link it to 'Windows Photo Viewer,' unfortunately I found that this program has a [.exe.mui] extension. The [.mui] is what is not letting me link the image to this program.

I've tried to change the extension to just [.exe], but wonderful Windows won't let me.

Particulars:
CanoScan 4200F
Windows 7

Thanx in advance

i dont have windows photo viewer installed as i use office picture manager. but if you locate windows photo viewer in the start menu, right click it and select properties it should show you the working target which you can copy n paste. Why windows is using the Multilingual UI for this i'm not sure, have you launched the viewer independently yet, this may result in a localised version being created? but i'm kind of guessing there tbh.

seen your thread in another forum, if you just want something fast you can link it to:
%windir%\system32\WFS.exe
or download any free basic image viewer/editor from download.cnet and use that?

Oooh Sub, so you see I frequent other "lovely ladies." I'm always trying to gather information. Now to your reply, I can find %windir%\system32\WFS.exe on the c:drive BUT it will not come up in my scanner software directory/folders choices. Wierd, huh? Tried to show hidden stuff- didn't work. So I think I might do this, found FreeStone imaging program, high recommendations and it's FREE. That's where I stand.

Sounds fair,

When you use your scanner do you touch the scan button on the device? This is an option (that requires default editor to set-up) but I usually open my preferred editor for the task in hand then scan from there.

Also a possible chance for renaming windows photo viewer! as it's probably a protected system file windows wont let you hack away at it, copy it to another folder (desktop?) rename it there and then cut and paste it back into its original directory, leaving you with two copies one.exe.mui and one.exe.

There is not an executable, [.EXE], for the built in windows photo viewer as this function is performed directly by the system calling the Library [C:\Program Files\Windows Photo Viewer\PhotoViewer.dll]. The photoviewer.exe.mui is a Multiligual User Interface file which allows for language changes in the file.

you may find a 3rd party image viewer will meet your needs better - something such as Irfanview [ IrfanView - Official Homepage - one of the most popular viewers worldwide ], this has an executable that you can specify in the scanning software

Sub & Barman, thanks for the replies. Well, I've given up the ghost on this one. Barman, your answer/explanation is right on. I tried all suggestions here and on another forum- none worked.

Sub, to answer your one question, "When you use your scanner do you touch the scan button on the device?" Hmm, yes and no. When it first starts up and if I have the settings correct they will work- BUT it only launches the 'Toolbox.' If it goes to sleep, the scanner's USB port powers off and I have to unplug it and plug it back in for it to recycle on. I've tried getting into the Device Manager to tell it not shut down the USB port with no luck.

Barman, I'm going to look at IrfanView and FreeStone. Thanx, I appreciate all of the help I received.
