Solved Help with BSOD DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE 0X0000009F

Hello all,

Could anyone please help? I am getting some BSOD on my (almost brand new in terms of usage) laptop and would like to know what can be done to avoid this worrying recurrence. The first time it happened a couple of days ago while browsing the net, the second time today while I was probably ejecting (safely removing) an old usb external drive.
I have recently had issues with an external WD Usb3 drive (it kept disconnecting while data was being transferred), which appears to have been solved after installing the latest Fresco Logic USB 3 Drivers.

0x9F which is DRIVER POWER STATE FAILURE that happens in
transitions between power states most commonly S0 (ON state) > S3 (Sleep state)
or vice-verse. You can read more HERE.

The most common cause is a device driver but sometimes it's the hardware itself
that is at fault.

In this case it appears to be coming from the nVidia GPU.

I would first try and install a different known stable driver release.
Please follow this detailed quote and roll-back the driver to a known stable release.

Install the 314.22 WHQL only.

• Uninstall All nvidia items in Control Panel > Programs and features
  • 3D Vision Control Driver
  • 3D Vision Driver
  • Graphics Driver
  • HD Audio Driver
  • PhysX
  • nvidia Update
  (Are you using nvidia chipset drivers? If so, dont uninstall anything other than those are listed).
• Now follow Drivers - Clean Left over Files after Uninstalling
• Boot normally now. Download 314.22 WHQL. While installing, Select Custom (Advanced) install. In the next page, follow this settings:
  
  

I want to ask you to remove the the Asus USB ChargerPlus utility.

Happy New Year and Here's my update..
I have removed the Asus USB charger utility and also the Nvidia drivers. I have tried old Nvidia drivers and also the very latest ones that I could find on the Nvidia website. To make a long story short in these few days there were no more BSODs but the computer would frequently hang and then freeze during use. Task Manager would stop responding and then Explorer too until only available solution is to do a hard reset. Had some issues too with the USB 3 Fresco Logic drivers which appeared to be fixed with the latest version found on the web. The usb3 port though still refuses to work with some of my usb2 devices but at least appears to be working with usb3 ones. I have now reinstalled the OS and will wait and see if this has cleared the issues or not.

PS. I have some suspects regarding the SSD crashing the OS on wake up, so I have changed the power settings making it so that the hard drive is never turned off.

Some of the latest nVidia does that (random freezing), but not the 314.22 release.

Still having the same issue, I was watching a youtube video and the PC became slowly unresponsive, I can see that the CPU usage spikes and stays high, then if I try to call Task Manager it would not respond, then Explorer not responds then I have to do a hard reset. In the process I do not get errors or BSOD.. the machine just hangs with several programs becoming unresponsive. The OS has been freshly installed and the notebook is mostly still brand new and original, I have only replaced the HD with an SSD. Any idea on how to troubleshoot it? Should I try to reinstall the old hard drive and see if the SSD is causing this issue?

Is the SSD new or used?

Hi, I brought this laptop several months ago as a replacement for my old ageing Packard Bell, although the little PB is still going strong on Vista with no issues at all and it is a joy to use.. I only recently decided to start using this laptop as my main computer so it is still in pristine condition..

I swapped the HD for an SSD almost immediately after purchase (and I kept it as it was) so if I put it back in place I should basically have the laptop in the same exact condition as it was when new.. the SSD was brand new too, I ran a diagnostic from the manufacturer's website (Sandisk) for my model and it did not show any problem, for what it is worth.

I will see if the machine runs smoothly on the HD and will update. Thanks.

Hello again, had another BSOD today..
I am still using the SSD drive and what caused the problem was the following:
-the laptop was previously put in sleep mode and then was resumed
- a USB3 drive was connected and the machine started showing issue when I tried to safely remove the USB3 device, at that point nothing happened, task manager stopped responding etc.
-This time I managed to click on "shut down" and left the machine on the shutting down screen, when I came back after some time there was a nice blue BSOD with the same 0x9F message as above in the post, also the CPU was maxing out and the laptop was in fact quite hot. I have attached the new info file, could you please be so kind to have a look at it and let me know if anything different from last time comes up?
I believe the USB3 port/driver might have a role in all this.

Update
The problem is definitely not caused by the SSD drive, I have reinstalled the original hard drive which is still in the same condition as it was when I bought the laptop and managed to replicate the issue by putting the machine to sleep with a USB3 device attached to it and then awaking the machine I had the same CPU spike, task manager not responding etc until I had to do an har reset. I have 3 different USB3 devices, will try with all of them to see if it makes any difference at all.

Many thanks for the reply, I have installed the latest driver as suggested.
I will try for a few days and see how it goes, and I will also reinstate the SSD and see if this solves the issues there as well.
