My sister-in-law’s Window Mail is now inoperative and now wants to use Windows Live Mail instead. I have installed a Windows Live Mail POP account for her on my computer which is working satisfactory but she wants her old Windows Mail messages.

I managed to have save her Windows Mail message store file for her and I am attempting to make it work in Windows Live Mail.
I have replaced the Windows Live Mail message store file with the Windows Mail message store file
but it does not recognise it and when the recover option is used nothing happens.

Any ideas please how I can make the old Windows Mail message store open in Windows Live Mail.

Hi pete39,
If the account being used is outlook.com or hotmail.com use it to sign-in to Windows Live Mail. It might automatically add the stored messages, if not, you will have to access Windows Mail and export them, then import into WLM.

Is her windows mail still on the Vista Machine? and is a pop account or a hotmail or live mail account?
If it live mail, as said it will bring in all the emails and contacts when you sign in to it
If not

install windows live mail on that machine
It will convert and move all her emails over to WLM when it installs
It has this option in it. Then you can use my pdf to backup WLM
Once it is backed up you basically go through the same steps but you pick Import instead of export onto the new machine
It puts the backup in a Stored Folder
Then you need to move the emails for each folder back into the regular folders
Once all of them are done you can delete the ones in the stored folders

Windows Mail (courtesy of the Seven Forum ‘hack’) is installed on her Windows 7 laptop, although now inoperable.
I did however find the message store and saved it on a memory stick. This I did during a recent visit there but I am now an inconvenient and distant 70 miles away.
She now uses Thunderbird which I eventually hope to transfer these emails too.

I am not usually a Windows Live Mail user but I have installed it specifically to deal with this situation.

I have the new folder/message store on the desktop and have used the import procedure as outlined in the tutorial, but I always get this message.
“No messages can be found in this folder or another application is running that has the required files open.
Please select another folder or try closing applications that may have files open”
There are no other applications open and I have tried other folders.

I use Windows 7 and we both use POP accounts.

Is there any way to open the Message store folder without using an email program?
