My cpu never goes over 45 degrees but it used to get hot as i put too much paste on originally. It should wipe off easy with a damp cloth. When it's dry,u can get rid of all but a stain with ur finger(not that i'd recommend that).Make sure it is tight against the cpu,and straight, and make sure u don't get any paste on the cpu pins. Also not to close to a back wall or an enclosed space.See if it still overheats with the side off, then it could be something to do with the circulation.Might sound silly, but make sure ur fans the right way round, blowing out,not in.
