How the First Planets Formed

The planets formed because that is simply how gravity and matter interact. There's no reason to suppose that divine intervention was required. It was Napoleon's astronomer Laplace who said "I have searched the heavens with my telescope and I have found no sign of God."

When he later revealed his new sun-centered model of the solar system, Napoleon responded by saying "But where is God in this model?"

"But sir..." replied Laplace, "this model works perfectly well without God"

As an anti-theist, I must avoid the obvious allusions to a celestial dictatorship and omni-creator, lest I be chased from the village by sycophants with burning torches, pitchforks and banhammers.

Now are we talking about how the planets actually formed or Raptor Jesus..?

Given my philosophies, such as they are, I can look to the heavens with a tremendous sense of wonder. It would be innacurate to suggest I don't have an appreciation for the trascendant, it's human nature to ponder one's existence and their place in the grand scheme.

There is, I believe, rational evidence that plainly describes how such things occur, the planets form due to the physical laws that govern our universe. There's no need to further postulate these well understood laws.

That's a ludicrous statement. You suggest that we are destined to ponder our navels until the end of time? Never fully understanding what it is or why it's there? I beg to differ.

Newton, Copernicus, Ptolemy, Galileo, Brahe, et al., all postulated formulations that, given the evidence, clearly explained their universe - or at least made tremendous strides towards its better understanding.

These 'heretics' were dismissed or even worse, as in Galileo's case, imprisoned for extolling such vitriol.

It isn't that long ago that people thought the earth was flat or that the sun revolved around the earth. In our collective nascence, we've been apt to believe all manner of nonsense for the sake of rationalization. In the end, the 'wonder' you speak of isn't futile. It's what will render us from the primitive notions that, since we do not yet understand, there must be celestial intervention.

Thankfully, I won't be tossed into a volcano for my beliefs, we've outgrown that silly notion as we will others.

Current quantum theory suggests that the act of observation modifies - or even creates - the thing observed.

I beg to agree with Antman,

Newton, Copernicus, Ptolemy, Galileo, Brahe,
They were all were right in their time, and although many of their theories still hold water today, an equal amount of their theories were proven wrong over time.

And so will be some if not all of the theories we "believe" to be true today.

They recently found out the universe is not ever expanding after the big bang, as was believed for the last 15 years.
But that it is pulsating, meaning after the momentum of the expansion has come to a halt, the universe will start shrinking again until it is back to the single dot it was when it began, and then there will be a new big bang.

This theory came about because they found out the expansion is slowing down.

We yet have to discover 90% of our oceans, let alone the universe.

I know you don't want to hear this, but yes:
We will never know everything.
All scientist realize this. (they will always have jobs because of it )
