Solved How to Have only one video controller driver in windows 7

Newegg sold it with 3GB. I now see that. Seems really odd as that's not to Acer spec (nor consistent with Crucial advisor either)

But as the OP is running 32bit Windows, OP can try running with 2GB. A single 2GB stick would be to spec (probably also good to check it's 533/667 MHz memory). Personally, regardless how it's sold, it creeps me out if memory's not to manufacturer spec. Even more so when getting BSODs

@Vishalshetty
Are you comfortable with removing / reinstalling memory? I think it worth the experiment to pull the 1GB stick out, verify the other is 2GB 533/667 MHz and try running that way. Would be simple to try before revert the OS

Yep 3 GB creeps me out too, memory should always be 2,4,8,16 etc...... Who knows if Newegg`s specs were even close, most other spec sheets I found of it said it came with 2 or even 1 GB

I`ve seen so many laptops sold with 3 GB installed from the manufacturer, makes my skin crawl

that`s only if his 2 slots are together, a lot of laptops have 1 stick on the bottom and 1 stick under the keyboard a PITA and just stupid in my opinion.

But very easy to do at the same time.

A quick youtube search will show where the slots are.

@derekimo
As to why the missing info for the lower one (the 2nd controller i965GM1), I don't know why or know that level of detail. :(

So I googled to find and compare the data you found in this case to another (I found the msinfo data for another case HERE) It shows same info also missing in the lower case, which is for controller i965GM1. So, don't know why, can only guess that's just how the data is for controller i965GM1 (Maybe the 2nd controller doesn't need that info? IDK just a wild a** guess.

No problem, I was thinking something was corrupt and that was possibly leading to the BSOD.

Thanks for looking into it though.

Guys, before i removed the sticker which was on my laptop, i saw that it said 1gb of ram but when i removed the back cover and i saw that there are two ram sticks - one is kingston 2gb and another was the default acer 1gb one.

Edit* - Also, i did a clean install of windows again and now no bsod! and its windows 7 ultimate. when i checked in device manager, only one driver was there!

Edit2 - I got a bsod, during the installation of firefox. and then again another bsod. the analysis is here -

Have you tried the suggestion yet of having just 1 2GB stick installed ?

I know that`s a long shot but we have to keep trying :)

That sounds like you have mis-matched RAM which can cause problems.
I would run memtest from a bootable CD/USB to see if there are any errors.
You can test each RAM stick individually, and test with both installed, it will take a long time.

Awesome, now lets see if it stays that way for 24 hours :)

As long as the stick you`ve found is the same size, speed and has the same timings it should work fine with your current stick.

But I can not stress enough how important it is to buy a 2 x 2 GB kit instead of buying another single stick, maybe someday you can do that.

I`m happy you are making some progress. Keep your fingers crossed :D

Hey, here is the snip of device manager!
Should i download intel drivers and try to install them or should i keep these default microsoft drivers? But one problem is that there ms drivers would not let me play any game at good frame rate as compared to installing latest intel drivers for better performance!

EDIT* - i searched for the same ram which i have by noting down the model number but the same ram was not available. i saw many others which look same like the one which i have (200 pin , sodimm)

And also the ram which i have is 800mhz. So if im buying any ram it should just match 800 mhz, 200 pin and SO-DIMM rite? doesn't have to be the same model?

I would just right click on it and choose to update the driver, leave well enough alone.

So it`s only showing 1 Graphics adapter now ? That`s awesome !!

You may have 800 MHz ram, but what speed is it running at, the specs only say it supports 667.

No it does not have to be the same model.

Install CPU`z and post a snip of the memory tab please.

Not 1 page I can find says it can run 800 MHz memory, it may somehow have gotten installed, but every spec sheet I find says it uses this type of memory.

DDR2-667/PC2-5300

Did you run the Crucial scanner on it yet ? That will give us some more clues.

Crucial.com - Guaranteed-compatible upgrades memory and storage for your Acer computer

If it gives you no more problems running that 2 GB 800 MHz stick, then by all means by another one of the same exact thing. Once again it doesn`t have to be from the same company.

Your PC may run just fine with 800 MHz memory, but chances are it`s still only running at 667 MHz. And the point I`m trying to make about that is this, say one day you do go out and finally buy that matched set of 2 x 2 GB sticks, now let`s say the 667 MHz set costs $20 less then the 800 MHz set, now knowing that your memory will only run at 667 MHz, which set are you going to buy ? Of course you`d buy the cheaper set.

After you post the snip of CPU`z we can see the actual speed your memory is running at. :)

OK, just as I suspected your memory is only running at 667 MHz

332.4 x 2 = 664.8 MHz because DDR means double data rate, but cpu-z only shows the single data rate.

So the 800 MHz stick is working fine, but it`s only running at 667 MHz, just as the specs say. So get the other 800 MHz stick you found and hope for the best, it should work fine.

You still have not told me what the 1 GB stick speed says, you have to be much quicker with your responses, I`m gettin real tired here :sleepy:
