If protected, you don't make a duplicate unless you like jail.

You download legal .iso's for the operating system you have and wish to install/reinstall.

There is nothing wrong with making a backup copy of the Operating System you purchased.

If it has protection, and there is a notice and agreement on the physical CD that says the CD should not be replicated/copied/pirated. Then there is.

Then again, the OP never mentioned if this was for commercial purposes or distribution.

Hi there

In fact you should be ENCOURAGED to make a backup copy. Note you are only allowed to use this copy on the machine it's licensed for -- or a machine where you can transfer the license to -- I think W8 has changed OEM licenses so you can actually move an OEM copy to another machine provided its deleteded from the original machine.

Cheers

He or she said it was for a backup, so it is perfectly legal. Selling it is against the law.

Back to the OP`s question, I know PowerIso will copy a retaill bought OS.
Nero will do it, but not disc to disc. ImgBurn.

Well it`s about time, IMO you should be able to move an OEM to another MB if your MB dies.

Retail you get 1 years support, OEM you don`t get support, big deal, who needs it.

The latest official ISO is available in Step 1 of Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7,
along with tool to burn to DVD or write to flash stick for reinstall or repairs. The tutorial also assures you'll get a perfect install even for retail.

A reliable way of backing up installer disks is storing their ISO in your backup to burn to disk or write to flash stick when needed. However if you have no other PC handy to burn the disk if needed for repair or reinstall I'd have the latest installer disk or Repair CD on hand.

To extract your DVD's ISO (I'd only bother if it has SP1) use ImgBurn to extract the ISO, then burn that ISO to DVD using ImgBurn at 4x speed. This is how you copy the DVD, too. So you might as well back up the ISO since it needs extracting first and you'll have it.

Just copy it. It's not copy protected.

I do it all the time.

If they want to feed me in Jail, I'm ready.

Here is the authoritative statement from license.rtf which you can find in Windows/System32.

10. BACKUP COPY.
a. Media. If you acquired the software on a disc or other media, you may make one backup copy of the media. You may use it only to reinstall the software on the licensed computer.
b. Electronic Download. If you purchased and downloaded the software online, you may make one copy of the software on a disc or other media in order to install the software on a computer. You may also use it to reinstall the software on the licensed computer.
