How to set up Raid?

I was interested in gettin a Solid State Hard drive to boost my data transfer rate? I already have a stock 200 GB 7200 rpm HD. How does this work ? Do I need to get a 256GB SSD or 60GB SSD. I want my WEI HD score to be in the sevens. What do I have to do and cheapest way of doin it Thanks.

In order to create a RAID setup, you really need to have 2 hard drives that are identical. Then, you setup either a RAID 0 stripe, which takes the 2 drivers and it splits the data evenly between them and gives you speed increases, but if either drive dies, you lose all of the data on both of them. The other option is a RAID 1 mirror, which means the same data is written to both drives at the same time. Thus, failure of 1 drive means that your machine can keep running without missing a beat. The downside is that you only get 50% of your total disk space as usable since the 2nd disk is an exact duplicate of the first.

A single SSD hard drive running the OS should score no problems in the 7's on the WEI. I have the 80GB Intel X25-M G2 and it gets a 7.4 by itself.

You will not be able to create a RAID array using an SSD and your stock 200GB drive. You would either have to get a 2nd 200GB 7200 RPM drive and RAID those 2 drives, or get 2 SSD drives and RAID them. However, 2 7200RPM drives in a RAID0 will not give you a score in the 7's. It takes an SSD to get into the 7's.

Thanks For the info. It helps. So I will probably go ahead and get the SATA SSD then, just deciding on GB Size though.

2 80GB SSD's in RAID 0, will give you a 160GB drive. 3 a 240GB drive etc......
3 30GB SSD's a 90GB drive etc.....
