How to use spinrite

I burned the img to cd & booted it up.It shows the program starting then when the screen is black with the blinking white dot on the top left it just stays like that & doesn't go any further.
It's on my main HDD that has W7 in it.It's 320gb HD.Now I can't boot normally & have startup repair running right now.I hope I can get back into it.Have allot of important files I didn't transfer to my external yet.
Do I have to uninstall the OS in order to get spinrite to run?I used it once before but it's been awhile & I forgot.
Laptop is running fine now,whew!Thought I was going to lose everything on it their for a min.
