Icon Cache seems to be not working in Windows 7

And yes, I just changed to Avast! and it did fix my issues as well as the same issue that is present on over all my computer (10 of them).
Great news !!! :p

@ Bill, Sometimes I say the right thing, lol  Though very negligible number of times, but sometimes ! ;)

Yeah, last question though :)

Can I just install Avast! and be done with it? No other settings to tinker with? There are too many settings for Avast! that are not too user-friendly, lol.

You can certainly use as is, and venture into the options over time. I personally disabled the Reputation services under the Cloud services tab as it seemed to introduce some delay on my system.

What kind of delay is that?

Ooops, sorry :o

Just in case you weren't aware, Avast has new Cloud Services for Reputation Services, and Streaming updates.

These both query the internet. While booting, and while opening applications. There is no accompanying display, so there is no indication. It took me a while after changing to Avast 7 to realize why applications took longer to open at times. I finally realized it was because I was disconnected from the internet. I have Cable broadband, and my modem has a standby switch that disconnects my PC from the internet when not in use.

I have confirmed the hang by opening an application, that then had a delay, and turning on the standby switch, after which the application opens. This can also happen on boot. I disabled the services to confirm. Now that I am aware, I have them enabled, but on the rare occurrence I have the standby on when opening an application., I turn on the standby switch to allow Avast to connect.

I only mention this as it could conceivably explain a difficult to explain, intermittent lag that defies normal troubleshooting methods. It may never come up, but just thought I'd share.

Hmmm, ok. So as of now the two cloud services produce a delay when not connected to the Internet. Do you recommend to disable even the streaming updates cloud service? What happens when I disable both, any disadvantages?

I have left the streaming updates enabled throughout and no noticeable issue with it. It was just the Reputation Service on my PC. As I say, you may notice no problem on your PC. A Guy

MSE was very effective when it was released, but it's quite the opposite now - hardly any protection at all from tests I've seen in magazines. Avast is OK, I used it for a couple of years, still use it on an old XP setup, but prefer paying for Kaspersky IS for Win7 these days. No icon slowdowns either!
