Solved IE 9 Search Box Missing

Why is this thread marked as solved? It won't be solved until Microsoft restores the feature they removed from Internet Explorer 9.

If you really want a separate search box in IE9, then you can just as easily add something like the Google toolbar or Bing toolbar add-on to have one.

Serious users need a seperate search box

Hi Brink, I appreciate that you guys and other (Microsoft?) folk hang out and help here; it's the mark of a modern, customer-responsive company. And I do like MS, even given a youth spent as a Mac fanboy! I would install the Google toolbar, but from what I read it "installs a Chrome frame" which makes me think I might as well use Chrome. IE9 has a reputation for sound code, standards compliance, HTML5 features, speed and other good things BUT these minimal interfaces are a drag - where the heck is everything hidden? Not having a Search box (as was implemented really well in IE8) is a real pain and MUCH slower to work with, as you now have to copy and paste your search terms or step back through pages - on the correct tab - to see the same search results again. Lots of users know what they are searching for and then have to evaluate a number of sites that have been found by that one search - so it is loads better to have those search terms persist in the search box until you want to change them. Even when you decide to try slightly different search terms, it is a real time saver to have the previous terms there for modification, rather than have to remember and then re-type the major part of them again. Also, if you don't get the search results you expect, a quick check reveals if you that's because you have mis-typed, or not.
So many reasons for wanting it more or less exactly as it was...
It's amazing that we now have all three main browsers hobbled by the 'smart bar' approach. I'll have to continue to use FF3.6.17 - search is a big part of my day.

Nope, I'm not from Microsoft.

I completely understand. It seems that all browsers are being made to be less busy and cluttered in an attempt to have more of the browser window for viewing the webpage itself. This is to help make them easier to use on smaller screens. The search function does need to be improved though.

Opera & Firefox both offer users a choice of having a separate search box or not .
IE 9 does not offer users many options to choose for themselves.
You can turn off search completely if you go to manage add ons & select search options, wonder if anyone finds that option useful.
I'm not a fan of the Bing search prefer Google instead, when I changed the search in IE 9 a page came up with loads of search sites but no Google the only way to add the Google search was to use the small search button. No I tell a lie if you click the search tab & scroll horizontally it eventually comes up.

In the 2+ months since I posted this complaint, I've pretty much gotten the hang of using the non-search box. I now find it convenient simply to enter search terms in the address bar, and IE9 just knows I'm searching. I suppose others could have considerably more complicated search habits than I do, but I no longer find the change unacceptable.

Would I like the search box back anyway? Yes.

That said, I prefer Firefox 3.6.17 and use it 95% of the time.

yeah, unfortunately it's "little" things like this that will slowly bleed customers from IE Go ahead and make your playskool interface if you need to to keep up with the Jonses but for ghods sake, let us at least turn the functionality back on!

The search in address bar /still/ screws my searching over at a constant rate. The one I really hate is when I type a search term that is close to the start of a URL in my history and hitting enter brings up the web page instead of search. UGH. It's really a /very/ poor UI choice... Gets a D- on usability compared to the search bar.

And I'm afraid that the Bing Bar or the Google Bar are insane overkill for me in the opposite direction and not worth the real estate that they take up for 90 options I'll never use (that frankly have nothing to do with search at all and are really just pushing products and advertising).
