Hello,

I'm new to 7 completely. Just learning the services, using the knowledgebase and so forth. I had been troubled by IE protected mode being off all the time and creating a flash effect when I navigated to most websites. I found that it was forcing offscreen compositing.

I was wondering why that would turn off IE Protected Mode? I did a simple test (off/on) and I noticed that using it seemed to be causing the flash effect, while it is supposed to work the other way around.

What is a "flash effect"?
What is "compositing"? (I've been wondering about that since IE3.)

I've been running IE8 on several machines since it first came out with Protected Mode off. Haven't noticed any problems but maybe I have the flash effect without realizing it.
