Incredibly High Ping

Hi, I just bought a brand new sony laptop with windows 7.

- My ping (to a certain ventrilo server) should be in the 30-40 range.
- It is currently 800+

I went to cmd and pinged google.com and other sites 20 + times, and the majority of the results were 700+ms. This is NOT normal, and I believe it is being caused by windows 7.

My download speeds are terrible as well.

- I have read everything thread I could find on this, and I have tried many things posted on this forum to fix it. I tried something in regedit and another command in the command prompt. Both fixed it temporarily, but the problem came back shortly after.

I am once again pinging abnormally high, and I do not know what to do.

Any help is appreciated :(

I am currently hooked up to my router, and I am right next to it.

Gah this is frustrating. The laptop is amazing, but I can't exactly do anything with 1000 ping. Ugh.

Ok. I just like, played around in network settings (dont even know what the heck I did), and my ping is normal right now. I really don't get this problem.

Since I'm considering going back to XP, I'll ask an unrelated questino to my internet issue. I made a recovery disk when I got the computer--> If I reformatted and put XP on, and I ever wanted to go back to Windows 7, can I use that disc to install?

If it helps, I had this happen lately. I had to change the channel and TX power on my router. (Using DD-WRT firmware) It cleared it up and I'm back to good speed and ping.

I'm not an expert, but someone will probably suggest this. It easy and worth a try.

Good luck.

I would gladly stay with seven if I didn't have 700 ping spikes. I was just gaming, and I had consist 60 ping, and all of a sudden it jumped up to 400-600 steadily. Ugh. How do I update my firmware nate? I have a wireless-N Router. Should I hook up to my modem to see if I still experience any problems?

edit: My ping is now back to normal. It seems like the ping spikes are less often for some reason, but definitely still present. I've tried everything I've read on the forums as far as regedits go and nothin seems to work ;/

If I were to plug into my Modem and still receive the ping spike issue, could we rule the router problem out? The manufacturer is Linksys.

yes you could ,have you had a pc or laptop running on your modem/router before? i think for linksys the address will be http://192.168.0.1 you will have to provide an admin and user password it should be in your router manual

Firmware Version: v0.93.3 Jun. 1, 2006
I assume this should be updated. The thing is, I never had any problems with XP a few days ago using this firmware. Would such outdated firmware pose a large problem with 7 only?

is that the version written on the box/router or taken of the secure site for your router if so it needs updating as it most likely will upset win7

I got that version from the last tab in my router settings. I went to 192.168.1.1 and logged in, then went to the Status tab and saw that. So are you saying I should or shouldnt upgrade?

alright. how exactly should I upgrade it?

i went to the linksys site and i see version 1.1 and version 2.0 (2.0 has no download links) but 1.1 has a link to this:
Setup Wizard

  • 05/05/2006
    Download 1.41 MB
    (Setup Wizard)
Firmware

  • 06/04/2007
    Ver.1.51.2
    Download 3.53 MB
    (Firmware)
    Release Notes
Do I download that, then go to 192.168.1.1, administrator tab, then firmware update, and select the file I dled? Then it jjust updates? I want to make sure I do nothing wrong.
