Install AGP Drivers for HD 3850, 3650, 2400 PRO

Hello.

Does someone succeed in installing Catalyst 9.11 drivers on Windows 7 with a Radeon HD 4650 ? What manufacturer card ?

If success, how run the hardware acceleration of Flash Player 10.1 ?

I would like buy a Radeon HD 4650 AGP for a Windows 7 system if it's a good idea
(my motherboard has only AGP 4x and PCI 2.2 ports , not PCI express).

If your motherboard is nForce3 or lower, don't bother because it will not work. Full system (meaning new computer) is recommended for Windows 7.

I have an HD 3450 512MB AGP card installed in my Dell Dimension 8300. Just got the card & the display works great, installed without a hitch using the latest ATi drivers. However, I've attempted to hook up the system to a 42" LG plasma for use as a media center and cannot get the HDMI audio to function. The display functions correctly, but not the audio. I tried using the method in the original post, but no success. Is there anything else I can do? Many thanks in advance for any help!

Yes. First check the device manager under sound part that ATI is there and working well.

Then if it is, right click the speaker icon in the system tray near the clock. Playback devices. Choose ATI one as the default output. If you don't see it, right click on any choice and then set it to show disabled and also disconnected devices.

Sorry, should have posted that extra info. The device manager shows the ATi is in there, but only under Displays, not Sound devices. Also, it does not show up in the "playback devices" section.

Then you should have an exclamation point in the device manager for an unknown device or something like that, in sound section. Use the device manager to install the driver for it. Or run setup.exe.

If you don't have it in sound section or any exclamation points there, unfortunately, there's not much more I could say besides making sure everything else is up to date like bios, chipset drivers, etc...

Then go into bios and disable everything not in use like parallel port, serial port, floppy etc...

Nope, no exclamation points...Bios & chipset are up-to-date as far as I can find on Dell's site. Could this be an issue of me having installed Win7 on here instead of XP? I could put XP back on here, but I'd prefer to stick with 7 if at all possible.

After hearing back from Sapphire, I have been informed that this card does not support audio via HDMI, something not outlined in the product description. Looks like I'll be returning & in the market for another card. Any recommendations for an AGP card with HDMI audio (native preferred, no adapter) on the cheap?

You can run audio from your onboard out to your tv if you wish. It's really easy if your computer speaker system has an available output to serve the tv. If not, you can run a splitter from the output of the computer audio to the computer speakers and tv at the same time.

As far as a new AGP card goes and cheap...not really sure about the cheap part....but you can look at anything in the HD 4xxx line and it should be well.

But try out my idea first. If you need help selecting a splitter cable, tell me what kind of input you have to the tv. Are they RCA jack inputs?

Consider a MB update.

AGP is awesome on Win 7. I have 7.0 WEI for both graphics scores with 256 bit memory. It depends on your hardware. This thread outlines how to install WDDM 1.1 driver.

Hello,

Thank you very much for this tutorial. I was using the AGP hotfix but now I managed to install these drivers which, hopefully, will improve my old pc's performance.

However, when I try to run Setup to install the Control Center, the only options I have available for installing are the Install Manager itself, which he installs from the original directory to the Program Files directory, and C++ Runtime. There's no Catalyst Control Center available whatsoever.

I've read somewhere that the installer doesn't install it because it doesn't recognize the driver in use, which was installed using your .inf.

Is there someway to bypass this or should I just install the control center from the hotfix installation file?

You're welcome.

That's completely false. The CCC will install well using Custom Mode of installation as opposed to Express, if you're having trouble.

If not, then the driver itself is not installed well or you have some other system trouble related to software.

Mine shows "up to date" because it's installed already.

AGP and windows 7 are not the best mix.
No, the problem is really linked to ATI/AMD and their poor drivers for AGP card.

The AGP Nvidia Geforce Series 7 run Aero perfectly under Windows 7.
The AGP Nvidia GeForce 6600/6800 run Aero well under Windows 7 too.
There are performance issues only with GeForce 6200 and GeForce FX.

Windows Aero runs fine with an (AGP) Nvidia GeForce 6600 or higher.
Even with Win7, a powerful Nvidia AGP card is better than a cheap PCI-E one.
Windows 7 supports AGP cards as Windows Vista does it.

Even recent PCI (not express) Nvidia cards are supported under Windows 7.

I wanted to buy an AGP graphic card to get a hardware support on H.264 playback.
Unfortunately for me, the ATI support for AGP Radeon HD isn't serious and there
are no AGP Nvidia since GeForce 8 : only PCI-E and PCI. Given PCI is worse than
AGP 2x brandwith, perhaps I should buy a new motherboard and a PCI-E card...

I see so much misinformation spread and it frustrates me sometimes. I'm only human so I suppose I have the right. Earlier today, I decided I was not going to post any longer partly because of this reason. It's difficult enough to help people with legitimate computer problems.

"No, the problem is really linked to ATI/AMD and their poor drivers for AGP card."

-Very excellent, if not perfection with drivers.

"There are performance issues only with GeForce 6200"

Completely false. I own an AGP one on another machine and it is perfect. It doesn't play latest games so well but that goes without saying. It is perfect for Aero, Windows 7 and older games. Not only that, it is a 6200A-LE.

"I wanted to buy an AGP graphic card to get a hardware support on H.264 playback.
Unfortunately for me, the ATI support for AGP Radeon HD isn't serious"

Yes, it very much is serious. I play 264 content with 15 percent CPU usage on my spec rig. If that's not serious, I don't know what is. 7.0 WEI both graphic scores.

"there are no AGP Nvidia since GeForce 8"

-False again. Download the normal driver from NVIDIA's site and install.

There is further misinformation in the post but I think we get the point here.

Hello torrentg,

I see so much misinformation spread and it frustrates me sometimes. I'm only human so I suppose I have the right. Earlier today, I decided I was not going to post any longer partly because of this reason. It's difficult enough to help people with legitimate computer problems.
Let's not get worked up over such a little thing !
So, I'm going to explain my point of view.

"No, the problem is really linked to ATI/AMD and their poor drivers for AGP card."

-Very excellent, if not perfection with drivers.

[...]

It's a fact that ATI doesn't provide a WHQL driver for AGP Radeon HD. In the official website, there is just an unsupported hotfix, see Catalyst AGP Hotfix - Radeon HD 4000 Radeon HD 3000 and Radeon HD 2000 Series AGP products . This hotfix is provided as is and there is no guarantee. For me, it isn't serious. If you have to provide tips and modified files in this topic to install AGP Radeon HD on Windows 7, you cannot congratulate ATI/AMD ! The problem seems worse with Windows 7 64-bit Edition.

"There are performance issues only with GeForce 6200"

Completely false. I own an AGP one on another machine and it is perfect. It doesn't play latest games so well but that goes without saying. It is perfect for Aero, Windows 7 and older games. Not only that, it is a 6200A-LE.
I use myself Windows Aero under Seven with my pentium 4 2.4 GHz, 2 GB DDR-RAM and a Gigabyte GeForce 6200 and it runs pretty well (only bug: Flip 3D slows down when there are a lot of program, but it isn't important for me). However, some models seem to have problem with 7 (like Aero disabled) : I just browsed this forum and elsewhere to conclude that.

"there are no AGP Nvidia since GeForce 8"

-False again. Download the normal driver from NVIDIA's site and install.
I know that NVIDIA's drivers still support GeForce 6100 and up. NVIDIA's drivers still support AGP and even PCI (in addition to PCI-E). But I mean that there is no AGP Nvidia GeForce 8 and up. The latest AGP Nvidia is GeForce 7950GT. If you know a manufacturer which sells AGP Geforce 8 or higher, thank you to cite it.

Hi torrentg,

Thanks for posting this thread. I've installed the drivers per your tutorial as closely as I can. For some reason I when I run Aero my desktop and title bars are scrambled and Aero will disable after a short period. The card works fine when Aero is disabled, but I would like to be able to run it.

Is there something in the install process that I'm doing wrong and may be causing these issues?

I'm running the ASUS SILENT Radeon HD 3650. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks...

Hi. It's probably an issue with your motherboard being old. Which one is it?

It is a Foxconn 648FX7MF-S. It's an older model.

I installed the optional SIS update through windows updater. I haven't seen much of an improvement though. It may take a little longer for Aero to disable, but will disable eventually nonetheless.

What you can do is try to go to device manager. Look under system devices for CPU to AGP controller. Update the driver and when doing so, choose different ones that are already on your system. After, update the video driver each time. Eventually, one may work.
