Hi,

When I turn off my computer, it often says "please do not unplug or power off your machine, installing update 1 of 1".

The message stays on for ever, and the actual update seems to materialize. Keyboard hits have no effect. I need to pull the power cable and re-start !

What can I do to stop this from happening? Thank you.

Go to your Update History, and see what the failing update is, and let us know - some updates can take a long time to install, and this may be one of them.

Thanks! Most updates were successful, but the below failed. The shutdown issue only started about 2 months ago.

You don't need to.
The link I posted is to a 'fixit' that may solve the problem.

Like I say, please open Update History, and order by date (click in the date header until the most recent are at the top), then see which are the latest failed updates (there should only be one) - post details of that.

Then go to Windows Updates, and Check for Updates - what is the oldest one in the list?

Then attempt to install the updates - if it hangs on one, which one?

Check for updates: (one and only)
Security Update for Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Service Pack 1 XML Editor (KB2251487)

The problem comes not from Windows Updates, but from the shut-down/reboot sequence which is supposed to validate/put into effect the updates. Everything seems normal, then at shutdown I get this "please do not unplug or power off your machine, installing update 1 of 1".....and it won't go away even after 20h.

OK - in that case, we only need to worry about the one update.

it's obviously stuck in the queue, and the download is probably corrupted.
That update has been around for over a year - have you installed any new software lately? (Nero have a habit of needing such programs installed)

Reading around this update, it seems that removing and re-installing the root installation fixes the problem at least some of the time.

Please look in your Programs & Features listing, and see if you can find the relevant program - it could be one of a few, but the essential parts of the name will be '2008 Service Pack 1' (start by using the search box and entering '2008' (without the quotes)
When you find it/them, post back before doing anything, and I'll see if I can find where it came from and how to download a fresh copy.

Once you've found it - order the listing in Date order, and see what it was installed with/by, if it wasn't a standalone installation.

Damned, I am not advanced enough to understand what this means, unfortunately.

  • What's "removing and re-installing the root installation", and how do I do this?
  • "Programs & Features listing, and see if you can find the relevant program" How do I do this, and how do I find the relevant program?

I ran the Windows Update again, and the latest update "Security Update for Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Service Pack 1 XML Editor (KB2251487)" is stuck.......it does not install, and when I hit "Stop installation" nothing happens.

Let's take it one step at a time then.....
Open Control Panel
Open the Programs and Features item
You'll get a large list of all programs installed - in the top right corner, you'll see the Search box, in there, type 2008
Now the list should be down to only two or three items - what are they? (List them in your reply if you're not sure which it is)

highlight one of them
now go up and clear the Search box (click on the 'x')
the highlight should still be on the program you chose
CLick on the 'Installed On' header - and your chosen item should still be highlighted, but now surrounded by other programs installed at around the same time what are the ones immediately above and below? Were they
installed on the same date? If so then they may well have been installed by the same program. List that program.in your reply.

I don't think any of those is the right one - I have the same ones, but don't have the update.

Possibly the CheckSUR tool is the way to go - I want to avoid you losing your Update History if I can...

Please go to Description of the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista, for Windows Server 2008, for Windows 7, and for Windows Server 2008 R2 and download the 64-bit version for Windows 7. Save it to your desktop, then doubleclick on the saved file.
While that's running read about the tool on the site :)
It can take a long time to 'install' - sometimes as long as an hour or more - so be patient. You'll get no 'results as such, and the results are buried a bit (read the page). Look for the log file (CheckSUR.log) and open it in notepad - if it's a reasonable size, post it in your reply (I'll have gone to bed by then) and I'll look at it in the morning if I can - Thirsdays are my busy day.

Wow, you're a real expert! Thanks a lot.

I downloaded the correct version of the System Update Readiness Tool (win 7 -x64) but the installation does not work:

"The following updates were not installed: Hotfix for Windows (KB947821)"
(pops up 10 seconds after double clicking on it)

This is bizarre:

I was finally able to install the CheckSUR tool, but at the end it just says "the installation is complete".

I looked for "CheckSUR" and "CheckSUR.log" in start-search, but nothing is found!

Man I am starting to hate this damn POS software! Sorry for making you waste your time with this, it just isn't working.

If you'd read the article I pointed you at, it tells you exactly where the log file is :)

C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\checksur.log and checksur.persist.log

Please attach both file to your reply.

Ach...I got carried away during installation, hmmpf. Thanks a lot for your help.

Here's the log file for C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\checksur.log here below. There is no result for "checksur.persist.log"

OK - the lack of the persist log is pretty much normal if there were no problems.

How is Windows Update now?

The issue has not re-appeared yet, but it may easily take 24h+ to determine if the issue is solved. Fingers crossed :)
