Installation of Seven on GF's PC

After watching me use Seven the past few days, she's asked me to try and install it on hers as well.

I know it will run with the current hardware and everything, but it's still a shoddy Shuttle, with a broken DVD drive.

So therefore I ask, how would I go about installing it on her PC? DVD and USB stick is out of the question. Am I left with nothing but a badly sounding "I'm sorry, baby." whilst really thinking "Hee hee, only Seven for me Muahahar!"?

I remember reading something about virtual <insert word I forgot>?

Thanks,
- Mort

I should add that the reason why USB sticks is out the question, is because the board does not support booting from it.

Install a virtual drive such as daemon tools on her PC then mount the ISO with it and install from within her current OS ;)

And just as you reply, I have just finished flashing the BIOS.

Turns out it was a 2004 build lol. Flashing it made it possible to boot from a USB pen drive, and the installation is loading files as I type.... But man it's slow.

*kicks Shuttle PC* You should be ashamed. You act like a Mac!

Installation finished

Hi,

So I installed Seven on the Shuttle PC.

Unfortunately the boot is very slow. About 5 mins I'd wager. It does not recognize USB pen drives, but it does recognize keyboards mouse, and even USB harddrives.

Furthermore a problem that I've also had with Vista is that opening My Computer takes a long time, and when that has loaded going into a hard drive takes 20 seconds and sometimes it just hangs.

I had previously XP installed on the PC and everything was running well enough there, it is a rather slow PC, and I've always suspected there was something wrong with it.

(And as I type this it started installing USB drivers for the pendrives. Only took about 20 mins)

I am sure that re-installing will not solve the problem and that the problem will only persist.

It is unbelievably slow (this is not an exaggeration but the most fitting word I can find). It simply puzzles me.

Now that being said, it is not a high tech PC.
  • Pentium 4 3Ghz
  • 1GB DDR1
  • The Shuttle's model number - SB83G5 (Recognized as SB83V10 in XP SP3, Vista SP1 and Seven Beta build 7000).
During the installation it hung at the "Video performance" windows (Or similar), but I have used this PC for playing EVE online with and there were no obvious performance problems.
I am at a loss here. It was my understanding that Windows 7 should be much better than Vista with slow PC's, and that several board members have had very good results. I have discovered one improvement though. The PC usually blows rather hot air out it's backside (hur hur) even in idle, and with Win7 it does seem to be alot cooler.

Would any of you tech heads be able to assist or come up with assumptions where the PC belongs? In the trash or in the living room with XP SP3 installed.

Thanks,
- Mort

P.S. I have attached the DxDiag.txt, that was made before I made any manual changes/installations to it.

I'm having this problem with vista at the moment aswell. It just started happening the other day, and only on one of my hard drives. I'll open Computer like normal, which is fast but if i try to access the drive in question it takes about 20-30secs.

However in my 7 install it's fine... Weird

But the more i use 7 the more i like it so i might ditch Vista for a while and run just 7 full time :)

Update:

A reboot took 428 seconds. Measured with Restart-Time.

It takes several minutes for it realize that it does not have network connection. I tried to install the Vista drivers for it (in compatibility mode plus adminstrator) but alas, it didn't work, as I expected.

Snipping tool won't load either. Could it be the CPU running too hot? Trying to install HWmonitor now.

Update:

The issues were caused by a bad harddrive. Switched it out with an older drive, and it's working superbly. Wow the performance, on this piece of junk.

I am now back to being happy.
