Hi. I've just thrown away my old PVR but kept the HDD as there are some telly programmes on it I want to keep. It's a Hitachi ATA/IDE 3.5" drive which uses a 'flat' cable. The only flat cable in my PC belongs to the DVD RW so I simply took the cables off the DVD RW and connected them to the Hitachi.

On bootup, I was pleased to glimpse a balloon saying something like 'Hitachi device installed successfully'. However, in My Computer there's just no sign of the Hitachi.

Can anyone suggest where I've gone wrong?

Thanks, Golden, but I'm now finding other webpages which say PVR HDDs are not formatted to work on a PC. There's no point in formatting my PVR HDD as that would wipe it. So it seems I'm out of luck...

Did you try right clicking on My Computer, then looking for your PC info. On one of the tabs, you should see the name you gave your PC, most of the info. pertaining to your system , read everything there on this tab...
I recall that was where my added memory showed up on my Windows XP.. ( going from 254 memory to 500 memory. ). down near the bottom , you do know you must reboot for the new memory to be found by your PC, if not it may not be seated correctly, I hope I've stated this correctly.

Job done, I'm glad to report. Turns out that DVR HDD's are Linux-based which is why Win7 couldn't show it. I installed a program called Ext2Fsd:
Ext2Fsd Project
which allowed me to see the drive. The TV programmes I'd recorded on it were in .trp format which, in reality, is mpeg so I can easily edit them for normal use.
