I only have 2GB ram at the moment, but a 64bit capable processor. I'm considering installing Win7 64bit just for After Effects CS5. Would this be stupid? Would I notice any performance drops, etc?

The answer is subjective, but with your RAM, I do not think that the change would be cost effective. If you already have the 64 bit DVD and you can go back and forth from 32 to 64, give it a try. Clone your OS, so you can go back if necessary.

Since Windows 7 64Bit requires minimum 2GB ram, wouldn't that slow other programs down?

With just two bits of ram, you would not see any big benefit from 64; and yes, it might slow things down a bit. That depends, of course, on how much additional ram is needed for your programs, etc. If it were my computer, I would definately not go to 64.

Yeah I'll go buy another 2GB.

For as cheap as ram is these days I would and did go to 4GB of ram.
If CS5 is your graphics software, and I assume it is, I would IMO get 2 more GB of ram as I had experienced problems with insufficient ram to do my graphics.

This is just a suggestion.

Yes Windows 7/64 is better but not just because the ability to use more ram. That being said 4 gigs or more of ram will just do wonders for 64 bit. It likes it. Good quality ram with all sticks matching and what your motherboard will allow.
