Solved Installing 7 to an new drive

I have Vista machine here that I have just flipped in a new SSD and I have an OEM 7 that was used on a machine that the board died in.

Now I have looked through the tutorials but cannot find anything but transferring the OS to a new machine.

My query is can I do this without getting those non genuine messages?

If I understand you correctly, this is a problem - that OEM was only good for the machine with the motherboard that has died.

You can try it to see what happens - you might get lucky.

Ok Golden I'll try if it doesn't work well I have still got the Vista

Hum doesn't like my try guess I'll just have to appeal to their good will but if not well there is always Vista or Ubuntu.

If this is retail OEM then you can try installing it on the new machine and then use phone activation to see it they're willing to reactivate OEM on a new mobo. We receive enough reports of exceptions being made that it is worth the try.

If not buy an Upgrade key and insert it at Control Panel>System after doing the quick registry workaround in Option Three here to use Upgrade version on a cleaned HD with no qualifying OS onboard during install: Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version

That OEM version from another manufacturers computer will Never install on that other system. Most if not all Branded OEM versions of any Windows OS is Tied to that specific manufacturers hardware.

It will pop up a warning something like, "This is already install on another computer" even if it isn't. That because the setup routine does not see that Specific manufacturers hardware.

Hiyya Greg yes mate this is an OEM I put in a refurbished machine that the mobo just fizzled - I was playing around with dual boots at the time and should have left it for a better machine I suppose.

I'll phone Microsoft but if they don't want to let me keep this one I'll just have to buy another as I have just installed a spare SSD and RAM in this old Vista machine.

Just am running on empty at the moment or I wouldn't have even bothered with that OEM.

I always can fall back on Ubuntu if I have to.

Did you buy an OEM copy to install or did it come preinstalled in a PC?

If it's retail OEM how long was it installed on the failed mobo? This can make a difference because MS will almost allow moving it if it is plausibly installed to the wrong PC, and from reports we get they will in some instances allow moving retail OEM (not factory preinstalled OEM) for other reasons like mobo failure.

Thanks Greg no mate it was a retail OEM that I put into a machine I rebuilt and added a lot of new parts to only have the mobo go bung.

Well maybe they might take pity on me but if not well I might up it to a 64bit 7 when I have sold the dog LOL!!

No seriously if it doesn't work then I'll wait and get a 64bit OEM. I can use Ubuntu in the meantime if necessary - it is only a back up for my main laptop

I would try reactivating on the new hardware. You haven't said how long the OEM ran before the mobo failed but the shorter the time the more likely they'll allow you to move the key to a new mobo.

And as I said we have repeat reports that MS makes exceptions when asked during the activation process to allow retail OEM to migrate. Kari reported about a year ago they allowed him to move several in a year's time.

Let us know what happens. Kari might have some pointers for you too since he has been able to do it every time he asked.

Thanks Greg I have reinstalled via your tut before and it was easy as but this one wasn't a factory install and I honestly can't remember how long ago I used it may have been a year ago as I was playing with beta 8 on a dual 7/8 boot back then.

I was trying to be a bit smart I suppose by using some old recycled parts and obviously picked a board that I thought was good - it looked good but ready to let go.

If they don't let me have it I'll just get the 64bit version instead anyway.

Glad to report that I phoned Microsoft in ? somewhere and they got me to type in slui or something like that up popped the activation screen - I entered the code and it activated

So it has restored a lot of my faith in Microsoft

No Greg the operator at Microsoft wanted to know what the problem was I told her and she just told me to type in that slu i or something like that in search - it brought up the activation screen I entered the code from the retail OEM box - it took about a minute and a half and then it told me it was activated!

Did you use the latest official installer with SP1? Saves about an hour's worth of Updates.

Be sure to do all Important and Optional. Set Updates to Install Automatically, treating Recommended same as Important.

Update failure is greater than one in a million while the security, performance and Driver updates can be critical to performance.

No I didn't Greg I used the OEM disk and the only optional/s I haven't done is the Bing Desktop and the Synaptics touch pad only because I don't - or I didn't think I needed either as I avoid the touch pad and that Bing is kinda irritating.

But I think I know what you mean so I shall do both to be sure I suppose I can disable them in msconfig startup / services?

I have now also done what you said and set the auto to a time that I know the machine will be on (I don't leave machines on while not at home - power costs / fire risk) and ticked all of the boxes in the update set up window.

No you don't need either unless there's a feature from touchpad that isn't working, or you want Bing instead of Google. I would use Google in the stable browser search box keeping all others out.
