I have the same processor and am using the stock cooler as well. Because this is a new build for me, I haven't done anything excessive yet and the stock cooler is OK. From what I've read, you want the max temp below 160deg F or about 72deg C. You have exceeded that max so my guess is that when you OC the chip the stock cooler will not be able to handle the heat and your system will become unstable when pushed.
I just read a review on a Cooler Master cooler that was relatively inexpensive and did a great job. Go for a cooler.

Those temps look good to me.

Maybe you are confusing the TJ Distance with the temps?

I'd recommend tossing out your stock cooler. The stock cooler that came with my i7 was terrible. The MB would shut itself down due to overheating, without me even overclocking it o,o.

I'm actually impressed by this hsf since my previous cpu was a athlon 64 x2 6000+ that had a bigger stock hsf, but ran at twice the idle temps, similar load temps though

Believe me when I say this. Get an after market cooler and don't oveclock it with that stock cooler in place. I had the same issue til I got my Megahalems push/pull set up. I know the i5 can take some abuse but don't over do it til you get another cooler. Just my .02 cents.

Luckly, I haven't overclocked mine yet, I just got bored last night and ran 10 minutes of OCCT and was shocked by the temperatures of the i5. My idle temps are really really low, while my load temps are really really high lol, I definitely need an aftermarket hsf. What are some good hsf that have a good performance/price ratio?

Here's what I have, a great value:

COOLER MASTER Hyper 212 Plus

Newegg.com - COOLER MASTER Hyper 212 Plus Intel Core i5 & Intel Core i7 compatible RR-B10-212P-G1 120mm "heatpipe direct contact" Long life sleeve CPU Cooler

Keeps my i5 at just under 30c at idle, and 47c max through 6 hours of Prime 95

Good luck, i5 is a great overclocker, but a simple baseclock change to 160 with turbo will give great overclock with the advantage of good power consumption. A Guy

P.S. Make sure your case is wide enough for this. 8" should do it, unless you have a side fan. What case are you using?

Thanks, I have an Antec 900 with all the stock fans; no additional fans.
I have been thinking of buying the CoolerMaster Hyper 212+ but Newegg's price for it isn't as appealing as others: http://www.google.com/products/cata...ct=result&resnum=3&ved=0CBIQ8wIwAg#scoring=tp

personally I am dissapointed by the temps on my i5 and I am not even using the stock cooler, I am using the arctic freezer pro v2.

As a comparison in same case with same components other than motherboard and cpu.

old overclocked core2duo 6420 with stock fan from 2.16ghz stock to 3ghz. idle temp 27C load temp 49C
new core i5 750 stock clocks with fan as above idle temp low to mid 30s and load temp of low to mid 60s. This is with stuff like linx and prime95 tho so when very stressed. But enough to see I dont have much headroom for overclocking, certianly not as much as my older 6420. Thankfully the i5 is way faster even at stock so there is less of a need. Also the idle temps are dissapointing when you consider that idle voltage on the i5 is 0.8v (lower than my 6420) and it downclocks a LOT on idle to 1.4ghz.

Is entirely possible I got a poor contact from cpu to heatsink but I am not reinstalling it. Agree also on the stock fan, looks tiny compared to the cooler I used and is actually smaller than the stock fan I got with my 6420.

The cpu on its own will overclock to 2.8ghz with all 4 cores loaded and to 3.2ghz with 2 or less cores loaded.
