Internet drops when downloading

Hi,

I recently had to reformat my computer and installed a version of Windows 7 onto my desktop. I discovered that when i come to re download some of my games via steam, or watch a video on youtube my internet slowly loses speed and eventually cuts out to limited or no connectivity (goes from 4-5mbps and drops to 40kpbs within about 30 seconds). This is the only computer or device which experiences these issues. I've looked online and tried various fixes which haven't permanently worked. Ive had slight success which has lasted for a night then when it comes to turning the machine back on the next day im right back to square one.

Any help would be appreciated as I never had this issue before I had to re format.

Welcome TDawesBCFC to our forum.

I'm not a expert on this subject but lets get you started until one comes along.

You state you had to reformat.
Could you tell us why you had to reformat? What was wrong with your computer that made you to decided to do a reformat?

Your limited specs show Windows 7 Ultimate x64; where did you get the copy of Windows 7 Ultimate and have you installed all the Windows updates including SP-1?
Have you activated Windows 7?

Sorry for the late reply, have been at work; Windows 7 is up to date including SP1 and is activacted.

All drivers are re installed. Ive had vague success with changing some settings (renewing and releasing ip and some other netsh cmds) but it never lasts, within a few hours its back to cutting out.

I'll get onto filling out my system specs with that tool

I had to reformat due to system crashes, I wanted to find out if it was a software or a hardware issue which was causing the crashing; Havent got round to testing that as of yet as im trying to figure this out first.
Windows 7 was from amazon.

I have been doing a little lurking and searching and I haven't been able to find where Xirrus wifi inspector has been upgraded/update for use with Windows 7.
Don't know if that matters just some information.

No issues with the ipconfig /all.

What firewall are you using, i see you are using MSE as anti-virus?

With xirrus i just want you to open it up and post a screenshot please.

Xirrus can be used with Windows 7.

Im using the Windows Firewall and yeah MSE is the Anti Virus im running.

There looks no issues with the xirrus.

Can you boot into safe mode with networking by pressing F8 at startup and let us know whether you have internet or not.

Post Layback bears request as well in #2.

I booted into safe mode with networking and I did have access to the internet. All the same issues as before.

Im using Microsoft Security Essentials as the anti virus and basic Windows Firewall

thank you for leeting me know about your anti-virus and firewall i will leave them for now.

Open a cmd by right and choosing run as administrator and type:

netsh int ip reset resetlog press enter
netsh int ipv6 reset resetlog press enter
netsh winsock reset catalog press enter
ipconfig /flushdns

Restart computer.

Let us know whether you have internet or not?

I done all of the above and restarted my computer, I do have internet connection but im still experiencing the issues when it comes to downloading.

Im not sure if these trends are just circumstantial or whether it may be just random however after i ran those cmds I tried my download via steam, within about 1-2 minutes the download speed dropped and eventually cut out. However I then tried to download via BitTorrent to test, and managed to grab a file without any hiccup.

Again, there has been times where Steam has not gone down aswell and this is the first torrent I have tried to download so it may not be worth anything but I figured it may help whether some setting somewhere just doesnt like Steam or what?

I have also noted with Steam, if when the internet speeds are dropping, If i tell my ASUS WLAN card setting programme to reconnect to the wifi the speed starts to go up.

Again, you guys are the experts. I'm just putting in what im seeing incase it helps.

Stop all the downloading and uploading via torrents and exit immediately. torrents can use a lot of bandwidth try and download as normal then.
