How to Uninstall Internet Explorer 9​

   Information

• This will show you how to Uninstall Internet Explorer 9.
• You can find Internet Explorer 9 here.

   Warning

Be Careful!​

Make sure you revert any/all customizations made to Internet Explorer 9 prior to uninstalling it to prevent any issues from occuring.

Step 1: Open the Start Menu, then type View Installed Updates and press enter.

Step 2: Search for Windows Internet Explorer 9 in the list, and double click on it.
NOTE: It could take a moment for the entire list to load.

Step 3: Click on Yes when prompted to uninstall it or not. It should start uninstalling it then.
Step 4: Once you have completed step 3, click on the Uninstall a program link in the left pane.
Step 5: If you like, you might also consider hiding this Windows Update to prevent it from being reinstalled.


Once you've done that, you are finished!

I installed IE9 RTM and now want to remove it and return to IE8.

I followed the instructions up to point 2. ( Wasn't very far was it.) I couldn't find Internet Explorer in the list presented. There are no restore point shown in System Restore other than a Windows Update dated today.

What should I try now?

When you installed IE9 RTM, did it finish installing and was working properly afterwards?

I was using View Installed Updates from within Programs and Features. When I typed View Installed Updates in the Start Menu's search box I found IE9 and was able to uninstall it. Go figure!

Great news jsquareg. It sounds like you may not have clicked on the "View installed updates" link while in "Programs and Features". It's the only thing I can think of for why you did not see it previously.

Can somebody define "customizations?" And what would be the process for "reverting" those customizations to the former or original state?

Thanks to DarkNovaGamer I managed to get rid of ie9, but now if I click on the shortcut I get ie8. How can I get rid of that? I don't want my disc cluttered up with programs that I do not use.

Rolling Back IE9

I have just installed IE9 and hate it !

Have done the UNINSTALL process, but this removes Internet Explorer totally !

Does anyone have a solution to rollback to IE8 ??

Double check in Windows Features to make sure that you have Internet Explorer 8 checked.

Cannot download it again either, so apart from reinstalling the OS, I am stuck :-(

Normally if you had IE8 originally, then uninstalling the IE9 update should have removed IE9 and restored IE8 automatically. Did you have any errors or issues when uninstalling IE9?

If you have a restore point dated before you installed IE9 available, then you could do a system restore using that restore point to undo and get IE8 back.

If not, then you might run a sfc /scannow command, and check back in Windows Features to see if Internet Explorer 8 may be listed afterwards.

edit1: Uninstalling* IE11 uses the same steps.

*Perhaps reverting IE to an earlier version is a better term than uninstall.

I did not see a tutorial for uninstalling IE10, but the steps are pretty much the same.

It may be time to update the title and content of this tutorial to mention IE10 to IE9 and IE9 to IE8.

You might make a note that one might not see an entry for IE9 (or IE10) in the "Programs and Features" window via step 4:
"...click on the Uninstall a program link in the left pane."

I did not see such an entry, so I excluded that step from this video:

You might want to watch at 720p and in the full screen mode.

Three browsers in about 3 minutes.

It should go without saying...
...but I'll say it anyway:
If you start with IE8 and then install IE11 without installing any other IE versions in between, then following the steps shown in the video should revert IE back to IE8.

If you start with IE8...
...then install IE9
...then install IE10
...then install IE11
You should be able to...
...revert to IE10
...revert to IE9
...revert to IE8
