IPv6 v IPv4?

I have just been reading about this in a newsletter and I am confused as all heck as to what it means.

Does this mean that IPv4 will not exist or exist alongside IPv6 or even can one communicate between a site with IPv6 if you have an IPv4 address and vice versa.

I know the tech has got to move on but this so very confusing to me.

The way I understand it, it is still not an immediate concern.
At least not in the way of the home user.
Ipv6 has actually already been in use for ages. I think the first capable systems were up before the internet even really took hold. Might get busted by a fact checker here but pretty sure it was invented in like the early 90's if not the very late 80's.

Yes M that what that article was saying and that by November the addresses in the US will dry up for IPv4. Apparently they ran out in Europe during your summer and in Asia in April 2011!

Basically what I'm trying to say is the NEED for it is probably still a couple of years away, if not more.
They aren't going to restructure and block millions of people from the internet 'just like that'.
Ipv4 will not just be turned off like a switch.
In fact I know of no company or hosting service that plans to do so at any point as of now.
