Microsoft Security Essentials, Malwarebytes and the Windows Firewall, is used by most here, including myself. You will never have OS problems due this software. All but malwarebytes was made specifically for windows. Other AV and Firewalls have caused problems such as BSOD, which the BSOD squad had to fix.

For most users it is all you'll need. I use Norton Internet Security which includes a firewall because I am on my computer up to 16 hours a day and I feel I need that kind of protection.

I use malwarebytes as well and run a scan once a month. I must add that it has never found anything so I feel secure in my protection.

Well, i'm currently using (testing) MSE with MBAM's protection module on. Didn't face any problems yet.
And If you do just casual surfing, windows firewall will be enough. I've used ZoneAlarm, it's indeed a nice firewall. You can give it a try. If it works w/o any problems, stick with it.

The free version of Malwarebytes does not offer real time protection. You can leave it on. Make a scan once a week or so.

Zone Alarm firewall has too many bugs in it to work properly on Win 7.
Causes crashes and all types of problems.
We see them on the forum after it causes the problems.
It worked well on XP for many years.
