This is about the fourth time I've gotten a BSOD (same 7A error every time) since I bought this laptop in 2011. Last couple times I just restarted my laptop and everything was fine but this time it wouldn't start up, I ran the startup repair tool but it said it couldn't repair/fix it automatically (forgotten exact phrasing)

This BSOD happened after I downloaded Tomb Raiderfrom Steam. Never even opened it, just downloaded it. Almost immediately after the download finished I got a BSOD.

I've not seen this before maybe Axe0 has?,
from my LIMITED knowledge that stop code is pointing to a bad HD, which could cause the above.
(ASC5 has been superceeded, never heard of your defrag program)

That depends mainly on what the second parameter is, it usually is either of following

0xC000000E
0xC000009C
0xC000009D
0xC0000185

these parameters indicate a I/O error which is why there are many 0x7A threads focused on the HDD.
Of course there are different parameters with a different meaning, some indicate a cabling problem where another indicate a IRQ problem where another indicates a nonpaged pool resource problem.

Unfortunately 0xC0000056 is an undocumented parameter for the 0x7A so based on the fact that there are no BSOD records the focus goes to the HDD.

Diagnostics Test

Run SeaTools to check the integrity of your HDD. SeaTools for DOS and Windows - How to Use - Windows 7 Help Forums
Run the long test.

   Note

Do not run SeaTools on an SSD as the results will be invalid.

Make a photo of the result and post it.

Run chkdsk
Disk Check - Windows 7 Help Forums
Use option TWO with parameter /r

Run HDTune to

• scan for errors, no quick scan but full scan
• check the health,
• benchmark.

It may take some time, but please take the time you need to perform it properly.
When above is done please make screenshots of the following

• the error scan,
• the health,
• the benchmark incl. following
  • transfer rate,
  • access time,
  • burst rate,
  • cpu usage.

Almost forgot, please remove following program and revert back the changes it has made using a restore point or backup.

I doubt he has a restore point prior to intall that progs about 5 years old.

Tried chkdsk, didn't work. It said

The type of the file system is NTFS.
Cannot lock current drive.

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)

I typed n... In Dec when I got BSOD I ran chkdsk afterwards as well and it didn't give me this error...

I don't know if this relevant but I tried to run cmd from startup (F8) but I got a BSOD at that too and had to do the startup repair thing again (which failed again). The error from that was 0x0000007B.

I'll try SeaTools next.

EDIT:

SeaTools check completed. Advanted System Care 5 was uninstalled prior to that.

I'm assuming for HD Tune I should download the Pro Trial and run that?

Don't need to, all functionality is in the non-pro version. Nobody will suggest a tool for which a trial version or payment is required.

The reallocated counts have reached a critical level, if 'Data' increases for these you have a problem and may need to replace the drive.

Ok... Is there anything I can do to prevent that from increasing? Is that the cause of the BSODs?

Not using the laptop or replacement of the hard drive is the only way to prevent increasement of the attributes.

It is a physical issue, the system had to 'reallocate' those sectors on the drive, eventually when there are no sectors in the reserved part left more problems will arise like system freezes, BSODs, performance decreases drastically, etc.
Please note, this is only when the hard drive has no reserved sectors left, a huge amount of bad sectors and is almost at the worst situation at which you are by far not

I tried to get the log but apparently the chkdsk never finished/worked? Probably because of the BSOD I described in my last post.

I got yet another BSOD while using Chrome just now.

Chkdsk never finished, else a log would be present.

I see a replacement of the hard drive is necessary for this issue to be resolved.

I would recommend to backup all important data to an external hard drive as a priority.
