Keyboard Input Language - Add or Remove

How to Add or Remove a Keyboard Input Language in Windows 7

   Information
This will show you how to add or remove a keyboard input language to be able to change the keyboard layout for a specific language or format. The keyboard layout controls which characters appear on the screen when you press the keys on your keyboard. Some input languages have several keyboard layouts; others have only one. This can make it easier to enter text or edit documents in multiple languages.

Input languages are included with all editions of Windows 7, but you need to add them to your list of languages before you can use them. By default, your keyboard input language will be the same language selected during the installation of Windows 7.

Here's How:
1. Open the Control Panel (icons view), and click on the Region and Language icon.

2. Click on the Keyboards and Languages tab, then click on the Change keyboards button. (see screenshot below)
Step1.jpg
3. To Add an Input Language and Keyboard Layout
NOTE: This will show you how to add a input language, and add keyboard layouts for the input language.
A) Under the General tab, click on the Add button in the Installed services section. (see screenshot below)
Add-1.jpg
B) Select and expand (click on + sign) the input language (ex: Spanish (Mexico)) that you would like to add. Now expand the Keyboard option under the selected language, then check one or more keyboard layouts (ex: United States - International) that you would like to have available for this language. (see screenshot below)

   Tip

  • To see more keyboard layout options than what is currently listed check the Show More box. Uncheck the Show More box to return to the default list.
  • To see a preview of the keyboard layout, select a keyboard layout under a language and click on the Preview button. Click on Close in the preview window to return to "Add Input Language".

Add-2.jpg
C) Repeat step 3B to add any other input languages and keyboard layouts for a language. When finished, click on OK. (see screenshot above)

D) Click on OK. (see screenshot below)
Add-3.jpg
E) You will now notice a Language Bar icon added to the taskbar notifcation area that you can use to change the input language with. (see screenshot below)
Change-1.jpg
F) Go to step 6.
4. To Remove an Input Language
A) You cannot remove a input language if it has been set as the default input language. If the input language you want to remove is set as default, then you will need to change the default input language to another input language first. (see screenshot below)
Remove-1.jpg
B) Under the General tab, select a input language (ex: Spanish (Mexico)) in the Installed services section, and click on the Remove button. (see screenshot below)
Remove-2.jpg
C) Click on OK. (see screenshot below)
Remove-3.jpg
D) Go to step 6.
5. To Remove a Keyboard Layout from an Input Language
A) You cannot remove a keyboard layout of a input language if it has been set as the default input language with that keyboard layout. If the keyboard layout you want to remove is set as default with the input language, then you will need to change the default input language to another input language or keyboard layout first. (see screenshot below)
Remove_Keyboard-1.jpg
B) Under the General tab, select a Keyboard layout (ex: Latin American) of a input language (ex: Spanish (Mexico)) that you want to remove, and click on the Remove button. (see screenshot below)
Remove_Keyboard-2.jpg
C) Click on OK. (see screenshot below)
Add-3.jpg
6. Click on the Administrative tab, and click on the Copy settings button (see screenshot below)
Copy-1.jpg
7. Check the Welcome screen and system accounts box. (see screenshot below)
Copy-2.jpg
8. If you also want this applied to all new future created user accounts, then also check the New user accounts box. (see screenshot below step 7)

9. Click on OK. (see screenshot below step 7)

10. Click on OK. (see screenshot below step 6)
That's it,
Shawn

Please post solution to do this from cmd. I need to remove keyboard layouts 0415:00010415 and 0409:00000409. I need to set default layout to 0415:00000415. This setting should work for all new users.

Having trouble figuring out how to remove languages from the "Add Input Languages" prompt (the window featured in step 3b above). I have been having trouble installing a keyboard for use with Unicode called the Alt-Latin keyboard. Everytime I install and uninstall the Alt-Latin keyboard (I am trying to troubleshoot it and figure out why it is not working with my computer), it leaves an option for the alt-latin keyboard in the Add Input Languages window. I am trying to wipe all of those off of my computer, as they are confusing me. Any suggestions?

Hello rferris, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Could you post a screenshot showing what you currently have to see if something may standout as the cause? :)

Certainly Brink. Thank you for your response.

Here is what i am talking about. I would like to remove all those options I have checked in the Add Input Language Dialog box (forgive me if that is the wrong term). Let me know if the image doesn't show properly or does not clarify your question.

What do you have in your "Region and Language" window like in the screenshot that you see in step 4? Could you post a screenshot of that instead?

Brink, I'm picking up from rferris on the exact same issue and computer. Hope you can still help.

I successfully removed the extra "Alt-Latin #2" entries by removing the AltLatin.dll in System/SysWOW64, then going to the registry and removing the four associated entries. Then I attempted to cleanly install AltLatin again. However, the MSI seems to think it is still installed (gives me options to Repair and Remove), and cannot complete removal--after about 5 seconds from clicking "remove," I get the message that it is "interrupted" and I must try again.

Earlier, when AltLatin was still "installed," it seems that Windows wasn't recognizing it properly because it would be in the list of keyboard layouts, but not show up in the language bar as an option to switch to. Previewing the layout also showed most of the keys to be blank, when it's supposed to be very much like a normal US keyboard until you hit Control, etc.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Hello mrcsanner, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Will it let you choose "Repair" to fix the installation, to then hopefully be able to uninstall later?

Choosing "Repair" has the same result, unfortunately. It seems that the MSI has some kind of error interacting with my setup and I can't figure out what is wrong. Is there any other way to install a keyboard layout, given the .klc and .dll files?

You could try doing a system restore using a restore point (if available) dated before the interrupted language was attempted to be installed to undo all of this, then see if you may be able to fully install it afterwards.

I managed to remove it by deleting its registry entries, then attempted another install. It seemed to complete without a hitch.

However, the same issue persists when trying to select the new keyboard layout. I seem to have an inconsistent state. AltLatin has an entry in the list of active keyboards but not in the actual language bar--to get the bar to show at all, I have to add a third keyboard layout (Dvorak in the screenshot), but either way I have no way of switching to AltLatin.

I've redownloaded the files several times, from different sources, so I don't think it's a corrupted install. Is there any way to pinpoint what the problem with my setup is? Thanks.

Not sure, but if you have a restore point available before this issue, it could save you time.

FIXED, ISSUE WAS FROM OLD VERSION

I found the problem. I was using an outdated version of the installer for WinNT. The Win7 version was not on the "official" site, so I had overlooked it. Here is the page (as of Oct 2012) that has all of the proper installers: Mamluk Studies Resources

I'm sorry for wasting your time, Brink, but hopefully this thread will point people in the right direction if this ever comes up in the future. Thanks for all your help...
