Laptop does not fully enter sleep mode

Hi all,

I've been experiencing this issue with Win 7 for a while now, I recently formatted and reinstalled a clean copy of Windows 7. I also made sure all of my drivers worked with my current laptop model, and made sure they were the most recent ones I could get. Finally I've got good protection software, I know as a fact I haven't got any virus or malware, however my problem lies when I set the system to go to sleep.

It doesn't always occur, but sometimes the screen will quickly dim black as it usually does when entering sleep mode, and then it will just hang there, the power lights will stay on, however I don't seem to notice any hdd activity according to the light. IF I let it run, it just seems like the screen stays black, the lights stay on and nothing happens, even after pressing the keyboard or moving the mouse. In order to fix it, I always need to hard reboot, holding down the power button for a few seconds.

Anyway I'm guessing what may be causing this is maybe a driver issue, possibly. Also I've got Hibernate disabled.

My system specs :

eMachines E625 Laptop Computer
Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit
AMD Athlon Processor TF-20 1600 MHz
4GB of DDR2 RAM
ATI Radeon X1200

I think it's worth mentioning also, that I updated the BIOS (Flashed it rather) a few months back. As far as I know I've got the latest version.

I guess what I really want to know is, is there any way I can view system logs for when the system enters sleep mode ? Perhaps next time this occurs, I might know what's causing it.

Thanks a lot

JJP

To try to find the cause, do you think using the clean boot method, before putting it to sleep may help?

How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

Check event viewer when it happens.

I haven't tried safe mode yet, I wonder If I could enter sleep while in safemode and then see what happens.

Regarding the second link, I tried doing that and it doesn't seem to work.

What's odd about my issue is that it doesn't always occur, but only on occasion.

Anyway my laptop is still under the standard 1 year warranty, (I bought it last July from FutureShop). Just a moment ago I sent a email to tech support, asking them basically the same question I asked here, and describing my sleep isssue.

Hopefully If anything I'll be able to get a new laptop for free out of all of this ?

probable ? :p

I hope that you are able to get a new computer if that is your wish, but this sounds like the laptop company blaming Ms and MS blaming the computer. I have een there and have done that.

I'm crossposting here, sorry... but I have the same problem on my Dell Precision M4400 running W7pro x64 (http://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-debugging/75681-problem-when-entering-sleep.html), except I don't have to hard reboot, the laptop is on and the screen comes back showing the login. It happens occasionally, and it happened just today. I have only seen it when putting the laptop to sleep while it is in the dock.

I have hibernate enabled.
I have a cordless mouse...

The problem is that what was once windows 7 has now had so many updates that it no longer resembles the OS well tested with so much hardware. Gradually the glitches accumulate. I was very pleased with win 7, but earlier in the year my keyboard started locking on occasion, and more recently the sleep only blackens the screen, then hitting a key shows the desktop for a second before switching to the login screen. OEMs need to be sent the "new" (overly-patched) win 7 for testing and re-release.

Typed using on-screen keyboard :( ...rebooting yet again...
