Hello,

Recently I have found that my laptop computer locks (displays login screen) after a set amount of time. I found this strange as I have disabled hybrid sleep in my power settings, disabled sleep for both battery and plug in settings, and disabled the screensaver and require login after entering settings in personalization. I have never had this problem for the previous 2 years or so I've owned this laptop, and I'm wondering if I have malware. The computer I am having issues with is the system that my profile is listed as using.

PS: If this post is in the wrong section please redirect me.

EDIT: My computer does not ever sleep or go into a screensaver, but the display does turn off and I have found that upon moving the mouse or pressing the key I am prompted with a login screen. If you need additional info, please specify it, because quite honestly I have no idea as to what the possible causes of this problem are.

Thanks

I'm not sure how much help I can be, but looking at your laptop support page I see the utility in the drivers download called SmartLogon Utility which could possibly be doing this, another thought I have is your laptop came with a hot key application that may be causing this, on my laptop there is a hotkey application that will dim the screen and/or put the screen to sleep no matter how my power settings are set.

Thank you for the response, and taking the time to check out my drivers. I have disabled smart login. My laptop does come with sleep buttons, but my computer only locks itself after inactivity. Is there any way to check if a specific application on my computer is doing this? Thanks.

Look at Method three of this tutorial http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1401-startup-programs-change.html and uncheck 1 or 2 at a time and restart and wait and see if it happens if it still locks out recheck what you unchecked and repeat.

Thanks. I have heard of unchecking half the msconfig startup programs at a time to slowly find the problem; I understand it is effective, but also time consuming (my thanks go out to you for mentioning it, as it did not occur to me at all). I'm a bit busy at the moment to try it, but I it is urgent I can work out some time to do so.

Are there any risks associated with letting this problem stay for a few days? Could it be a possible virus or malware that is something I should fix ASAP?

Thank you.

After a restart of my computer the problem no longer appears to exist - I did not yet even do troubleshooting with msconfig, so I am assuming the problem is solved; if it reappears, I will likely try to find out the reason. Thanks!
