Wait, if you can install the full version with an upgrade disc whats the point of buying the full version? =|

Though $49.99 would be perfect as I will hardly have any cash (if I have any) after building my first Desktop.

We can 2x the price for the boxed version... Home Premium upgrade has a nice price though I don't like upgrades... prefer clean install discs (YES I KNOW THAT I CAN MAKE A CLEAN INSTALL WITH UPDATE DISC before anyone points it out).

I'll probably get 7 SP1 Home Premium since XPM sux.

I find upgrading from whatever version of windows causes problems, even within the Win 7 builds themselves or is this something they will be able to tweak and correct before the release?

HAHA good one.

On topic, I only trusted upgrades when I was a kid. I've learned a lot since then and only do clean installs of Windows.

As far as upgrades go, I used to avoid them like the plague because they really did cause friends a lot of grief. But I have gone through almost all of the builds of Win 7, started with 32 bit. When I switched to 64 bit I, of course, did a clean install, but it has been upgrades since then. I had one 32 bit upgrade fail on me, probably because of an early version of AVG still being installed, but Win 7 rolled back perfectly. I really think MS has done a great job with the upgrade process. Clean installs will always be better, but with my insane desire to try every new build I just don't have the time.

Upgrade discs are bad news. Don't you have to have a previous OS that is supported to even install Windows 7? What if you only have XP laying around, i heard you can't upgrade from that.

also, will an update be possible from xp?

finally, can you update more than one computer with the update disc?

You have to have a vista disk, though it is possible to do a clean install from an upgrade disk.

how do you make clean install with update disc?
1. Put in the update disk (Boot from it, not from within Windows)
2. Install your clean install, BUT DON'T ENTER YOUR PRODUCT KEY!
3. Let it finish the install and boot into the new install.
4. Open the disk up again (this time from within windows) and run setup.
5. Enter the product key when it asks (not sure exactly when this happens in an upgrade, just put it in when it asks, but ONLY on the second install)
6. Do not get latest updates for install
7. Let it finish again, and your done!

also, will an update be possible from xp?
No.

finally, can you update more than one computer with the update disc?
Yes. But not the key.

I did this all the time in WinXP whenever my mom's desktop needed reformatting.
She bought the Windows XP Home upgrade and when I went to install it, it asked for a full version disc (either WinXP Home or Pro...luckily I had a burnt copy of XP Pro laying around).
Never had any problems.

Not entirely sure if this method would work in Vista though, Vista probably handles upgrades differently.

Hmmmm..... It will definitely be worth trying. It seems to work.
I will try it later at some point if I can get an upgrade disk. Maybe if/when I get technet Subscription.

Just a warning to those that wish to use the Upgrade clean install method:

YOU MUST OWN THE PREVIOUS VERSION OF WINDOWS FOR THIS TO BE CONSIDERED LEGAL!!!!!!!!!!!
i.e. Own Windows Vista and purchase the Windows Seven Ult upgrade.

To do the upgrade they need to be installed. Then you install [OS here] through setup in the OS you want to upgrade from....

"can you update more than one computer with the update disc? "
You can use the one disk, but a new licence and key will be needed for each additional computer, you may be able to buy additional licences from Microsoft.
