I looked into a Dell, but it turns out they won't sell you one without an OS (ba*****s).

Dump the hard drive first thing and put in a blank one! That way you can also see a larger drive to start off with rather then running out of space once you have 7 going. (besides getting rid of all that Dell crud they stick on)

I ordered mine from here, CyberPower Inc. - UNLEASH THE POWER - Create the PC of your dreams, and purchased with a bigger, blank HDD. Decided not to go with the Dell, because I could get a better laptop from here for about the same price.

Question: I have windows XP Pro. Full version. on top of XP Pro I have windows Vista upgrade addition. Can I now up grade windows 7 premium on top of of the vista upgrade?

so I'll need to reinstall my OEM vista backup disc that came with my laptop -groan-not cool.

I recall taking an OEM HP install with x86 and installing x64 from a torrent for a clean install.
I called MS to get the licence key and there was no issue at all.
I was nervous about them rejecting it though.

Is it possible to just call them for a licence key with the old Vista key so that you can upgrade?

Especially important as ....of course.....i have already installed 7 over the x64 Vista

One simple answer! "Clean Install"! That's it folks!

Upgrade of Clean Install you choose

Vista Ultimate Upgrade package was about 100.00 cheaper than Retail.
You can clean install or upgrade install with it... Clean install if you choose only do not enter a KEY when ask, your key will fail, it is a UPGRADE KEY. continue with install, once your finished.. then boot to HDD and when Vista is open, insert the DVD again, when ask click UPGRADE, when ASK insert your KEY, it will accept cause you have an UPGRADE KEY. when it is finished, activate by : start -> type cmd (run as admin) @ popup type slmgr.vbs -ato, wait till popup say your activated.
The same can be done with Windows 7.
I currently am running Vista SP2 upgrade to Win7 7022 upgrade thru Win7 7231.
