License Information for Windows 7

How to See Your Windows 7 Licence Information

   Information
This is a fool-proof way to check your Windows 7 licence information using the command prompt, especially handy if you're using an evaluation copy of Windows 7
   Note
Using winver alone doesn't necessarily display the correct expiration date, nor the license status

1. Open a command prompt by pressing the Winkey+R, typing cmd into the address bar and hitting enter.
07-08-2009%2022-02-35.png

2. In the command prompt type;
slmgr and hit enter.
07-08-2009%2022-11-38.png

   Information
A Windows Script Host will pop up informing you of an invalid combination of command parameters.

In the script host you'll be shown Global Options, Advanced options, Volume Licensing: Key Management Service (KMS) Client options, Volume Licensing: Token-based Activation Options & Volume Licensing: (KMS) Options.

For most, the global options will do. The most frequently used command will be to check the licence status and expiration date.

3. To display the current license information type into the command prompt;
slmgr /dli and hit enter.
07-08-2009%2022-12-40.png

4. To display detailed information on the current license type into the command prompt;
slmgr /dlv and hit enter.
07-08-2009%2022-13-15.png

5. To display the expiration date for the current license type into the command prompt;
slmgr /xpr and hit enter.
07-08-2009%2022-13-57.png

   Note
If an evaluation copy of Windows is being used, the rearm command may be used up to three times to extend the grace period. Grace period, and rearm counts are displayed by using slmgr /dlv
07-08-2009%2022-45-57.png

6. To rearm Windows and extend the grace period, in the command prompt, type;
slmgr /rearm and hit enter.

7. Restart your system to apply the changes.

Hello Prudhivisekhar,

I'm not sure of what you mean, but this will show you how to change the product key number to have Windows 7 activated using it instead. If you use a legal valid pruduct key number, then you can make it your permanent one by not having to change it.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/18630-product-key-number-change.html

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Question about the "legal valid product key". Can you enter a valid "Ultimate Upgrade" key? I want to get legal but also want to make sure I buy the version that will allow me to enter a key after the rearm winds down and not require any re-install. If you can enter an "Upgrade", I'm wondering how you would then be required to prove you had the pre-requisite upgrade base product.

Thanks!

Yes... the slmgr -dli command says I am: Windows(R)7, RETAIL channel

With doing a clean install I can see it asking for the original VISTA or XP install materials to validate that I am doing an upgrade, but just entering in the product key on activation on an old install I guess it will "trust me".

FYI.... I purchased the Ultimate Upgrade and entered the Product Key. The verification process worked and I am registered.

My only whine is that it never replaced the Black Desktop with my Desktop Graphic from before the trial period ran out.

Does this mean my windows 7 license is valid for eternity?
Because I don't really get it, I thought I had a evaluation version which would expire. about 10 days ago I got a pop-up that told me to backup my files because my license would expire in 14 days...so I bought a new license yesterday and before I do anything with it I check my old license once again. And now my old license seems to be valid and I don't get the pop-up....:shock: just now I'm typing this the pop up shows up saying I got 4 days left...tried to screen shot it but it faded pretty fast:

windows7popup2.jpg

Do I need to install my new license or will my current one keep doing the job (and can I perhaps give my license to someone else.)
Because the Pop-up disappeared pretty fast and I can find nothing about it in the Action Center or other control panels, it seems rather fake to me, or maybe it's a bug?

PS; How do I add pictures in advanced mode? In quick edit mode ti was a piece of cake but in advanced it seemed I coudl only add file links :huh:

Hello Marskrammer,

Since you only have an evaluation copy, you will still need to change your key number to the one that you purchased and then activate Windows 7 before the old one expires. :(
