License Information for Windows 7

How to See Your Windows 7 Licence Information

   Information
This is a fool-proof way to check your Windows 7 licence information using the command prompt, especially handy if you're using an evaluation copy of Windows 7
   Note
Using winver alone doesn't necessarily display the correct expiration date, nor the license status

1. Open a command prompt by pressing the Winkey+R, typing cmd into the address bar and hitting enter.

2. In the command prompt type;
slmgr and hit enter.
07-08-2009%2022-11-38.png

   Information
A Windows Script Host will pop up informing you of an invalid combination of command parameters.

In the script host you'll be shown Global Options, Advanced options, Volume Licensing: Key Management Service (KMS) Client options, Volume Licensing: Token-based Activation Options & Volume Licensing: (KMS) Options.

For most, the global options will do. The most frequently used command will be to check the licence status and expiration date.

3. To display the current license information type into the command prompt;
slmgr /dli and hit enter.

4. To display detailed information on the current license type into the command prompt;
slmgr /dlv and hit enter.

5. To display the expiration date for the current license type into the command prompt;
slmgr /xpr and hit enter.

   Note
If an evaluation copy of Windows is being used, the rearm command may be used up to three times to extend the grace period. Grace period, and rearm counts are displayed by using slmgr /dlv

6. To rearm Windows and extend the grace period, in the command prompt, type;
slmgr /rearm and hit enter.

7. Restart your system to apply the changes.

Hello Jeffetz,

Was your Windows 7 an evaluation copy as well?

Either way, check to make sure that your Windows 7 is activated.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Thanks Shawn. I already Got my copy activated for more than a month now. Checked the properties just to be sure.

But the notification again popped out and is telling that i still have 3 days until the evaluation of Windows ends.

Hope you can help me further regarding this. Thanks!

Thanks, rsvr85 for a great tute.

I'm wondering why my copy of 7 pro 32bit has license status: licensed, but also gives a rearm count (4), when using the /dlv switch. I thought rearm was only for extending a temporary license. On my Vista system it's Licensed with no rearm count given.

Hello Paul,

Using the rearm option only resets the license state, so it doesn't matter if your Windows has been activated/licensed or not to be able to use the rearm option.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hi Shawn,

I think I understand that, but what I don't get is why rearms would be listed on an install that's fully licensed. I think this tute implies that rearm is only for evaluation situations, but rearm's presence on my licensed install suggests that it's actually a count of permissible full installs before the need for some overriding manual MS approval process trips. And then there's the question of why one of my licensed installs doesn't list rearms but the other does. Just trying to understand the process. Two days ago I didn't even know of the explicit rearm parameter.

Be well,
p.

Thanks Shawn. That doesn't answer all my questions, but I appreciate the link on extending the evaluation period - another keeper.

Best wishes,
p.
