Solved Long standing USB port problem

For a long time now I have not been able to load a stick to ANY USB ports on my Asus P8Z77-V board. Have tried plugging sticks into ports that I know are working ie the mouse and KB ones but even with a brand new stick I get no joy.

I have tried sfc chkdsk, malware scans, loading the drivers again from saved files, including the Windows feature and Slim Drivers (something I don't like to use but any port in a storm) , Mr Fixit etc etc ad nauseum and am getting nowhere.

In Devices and Printers I get what is in the pics any ideas as I think I shall have dump the board soon as I can get nowhere with Asus support - their site is now almost impossible to access and full of rubbish re 10 and how good it is. :sarc:

I have had this problem myself and I can tell you what has worked for me.

First let me say that A.) I am no expert and 2.) I don't fully understand the problem or the solution.

That said consider this a "use at your own risk" idea and please by all means use full precautions in the way of backups, restore points etc.

In my research of the problem I came to understand that Windows builds a list of devices plugged into USB ports. Once a list of "ghosted" devices accumulates it can and apparently does interfere with other devices being recognized.

For instance after a few months I'll find my phone is no longer recognized. This is especially true if I have used my computer to work on a number of other phones in the interim. Similar experiences occur with various other USB devices after a time.

My research led me to a program (free and open source) called "Ghostbuster" @ GhostBuster - Home

Using this to remove the "ghosted" USB entries has worked for me repeatedly over a period of years and has done no harm to my system. After running the program problem devices are once again recognized in the usual fashion.

It's a trifle tedious as you have to go through a list of devices and select only those that you recognize as truly removed USB devices.

Again This is what has worked for me! Even the programs coder advises " use it with care and only if you know what you are doing."

I offer this only because, as I had, you seem to have "tried everything" and nothing worked.

Do your own research. Make your own decision.

Not sure how it compares to Ghostbusters but you also might have a look at the USB Mass Storage cleanup tool.. How to Cleanup and Remove old USB Mass Storage Drivers. It removes all old USB Mass Storage devices and drivers for devices not connected to your computer (which is what make them "ghosts")

Ok you folks I am running a Kaspersky rescue disk out of desperation right now but will give those a try cos I don't really want to have to replace the board and the ways things are it would have to be the CPU and RAM as well with that Skylake stuff

But if I have to then I shall go for something less upbeat as I bough tis one to try OC but really it isn't worth it eh?

All USB flash drives (and USB external disks) failing with the same device driver error code= 10 is often caused by driver filters. Post the result of Filter Load Order tool. Hopefully your problem can be fixed too <fingers crossed>

Many times when you do a clipboard you will find that it is using Notepad.a
When you send something to Clipboard just look in Notepad.

Can't say I've ever had that happen. I just tried it with the above program and there was nothing there.

I have had it happen to me but I don't remember what I was doing at the time. So my suggestion at best is a big Maybe.

Shouldn't really need to find or look for the clipboard, it only stores one thing at a time anyway, just right click> paste or Ctrl+V.

That is an interesting tidbit though.

Yep that is what I did but nothing showed maybe it is the board dying?? Anyway I ma away form my place for a bit so will have to try next time I am there.

Can you be more specific? What didn't show????

If you could try that tool again per above as i've never had a problem with it before (so am curious as to where you find a problem)

But to save time (and your nerves in trying to fix this problem!) here's alternate instruction to manually provide the starting data i want

1. Right click on any disk drive you see in Device Manager, select Properties then the Details tab
2. Use the pull down menu to carefully look if any entry exists for Class upper filters and/or Class lower filter (see snapshot below) For each if found, you can Ctl-A to select all the display info then paste that info for each into next post. Or simply take snapshot(s) if easier
3. Now go to the Driver tab. Click the Driver Details button. Provide a snapshot of the Driver File Details window that appears

Ok I will try that when I next have access to the machine. IT is very frustrating though because I have several USB outlets on the thing and not one of them work with a stick/s yet the KB and mouse no problems

Also at desktop screen on the Password appears and is entered it pops up this ini message??

Now I notice the second drive the spinner has that PartMnr listed in the filters.

Have had problems with this Ivy machine for a long time now

Bingo! I've fixed this problem before. It's the Samsung Rapid Mode filter. Try turning off Rapid Mode. Verify the Samsung lower filter is no longer listed. Try your usb drives again. Hope that works for you too!

Bingo! I've fixed this problem before. It's the Samsung Rapid Mode filter. Try turning off Rapid Mode. Verify the Samsung lower filter is no longer listed. Try your usb drives again. Hope that works for you too!

Thanks CG mate I shall give it a whirl when I am next at my place (I live with my partner now).

Perhaps it has been causing the other problems too and I shall reinstall the Magician too - I have used it to do things with the drive nothing over the top but again perhaps it has got corrupted.

Who would even think that would cause my board USB's to fail?? it simply makes no sense - to me
