Macrium free 5 couldn't create image

Hi guys,

I recently built a pc and all is well. Clean install of w7 HP 64. For the first couple of days I was in and out of the system as the default admin (user you are asked to create during w7 install). It wad during this time I installed macrium reflect free 5. I images the system after getting all the drivers in and then set up a scheduled backup for 7am each day. Worked fine.

Now I have created a normal user for me without admin privilege (for security reasons) which will be my day to day login. However this morning macrium failed to run the scheduled image. I was logged in as me, the low lvl user, not admin. The log file had an error about being unable to access \admin\xml file

I'm guessing this is because I installed macrium whilst an admin? Additionally I created the xml file whilst admin and then turned it into a schedlue whilst admin. However the xml and schedule are both set to run as admin with the admin password typed in.

Macrium is available to me as a normal user but when I launch it I'm asked for the admin password. Just trying to give as much info as poss.

Go to search
type Macrium. When it pops up right click and then run as administrator.
Give the password from your administrator account.

Thanks for reply. I'm no expert on permissions etc so sorry for asking more about this.

You suggest i run macrium elevated as admin. Fine, I can see how that would work. But I don't want to have to keep typing in my quite long and secure admin password every time I want to use macrium when logged in as normal lvl user.

Is there another solution?
Should I uninstall macrium and reinstall through my normal user login. Would this change anything?

You can give this a try and see how it goes.

If that does not work a reinstall would be the easiest way to go.

Ive had a good read of the link you posted thanks - I get the general idea.

Im also currently trying to move my steam account (and all the games) from my old PC to this so Im avoiding doing loads of HDD related activity at once....however whilst waiting i read this thread from macrium support:

Macrium Support Forum - scheduled image in W7 as non-admin

Seems to imply that no matter what I do to launch macrium needs an admin password and to do the scheduled backup also needs it.

Do I have the wrong end of the stick as it appears no ammount of fiddling around with groups and permissions will resolve this.

Thoughts?

Install "all users"

I think you can reinstall it right on top of the existing installation. There should be an "install for all users" when you are setting the install up. If you do try that I would have a fresh backup and restore point ready.

Hi guys,

This problem still persists for me and Im surprised others havent mentioned it until now.

Im running two logins - my standard admin login created when w7 first installs and a user login in my name with lower powers so that viruses and the like dont get admin powers straight off the bat.

I tried doing what folks suggested above, to the point of uninstalling macrium and then reinstalling it when logged in as my normal user. Sadly none worked.

When I installed as the normal user, it didnt even appear in my normal users uninstall programmes list....it only appeared if i logged in as admin and looked there.

It would seem macrium is totally focused on being logged in as admin when running. If, through my normal user account, i fire up macrium with a right click run as admin, that seems to work for THAT session. However if i reboot i have to remember to do it again.

As such im finaing that half of my scheduled backups fail because ive forgotten to launch macrium from my normal user account as admin.

Im now finding it a lot easier to simply remember to log off and log back on as admin before putting the pc to sleep at night.

However, none of these are 'elegant' solutions. For those of you doing scheduled backups (daily for example) - how are you overcoming this?

I again point to the macrium support thread where macrium say that it needs admin privelages:

Hi Matt,

I know I'm not helping with the OP question, but...

Why do you need daily backup images?

Do you have your OS, Programs, and DATA on the "C" drive?
Are you installing/un-installing/configuring OS and programs/games daily, and that is the concern?

Or, are you imaging daily to backup your latest DATA?
If so, there are better backup options than imaging the C drive just for DATA.

I'm sorry but I don't think there's a way around supplying Admin rights to do MR backups.

I have a multi-account machine. I installed MR using my account. Whenever I try to run MR backups from the other accounts, I get a popup requesting the Admin password. Don't think you can avoid this.
