Hi all

I have been having so many problems of late and am not able to find a solution. Here's a description:

I have been unable to install updates for a couple of months now so I did a system restore. It returned the error unspecified error occurred during system restore 0xc0000022.

I tried to do another update after this and none was successful (14 failed). I got the following error codes: 800706F7, 80073712, 80070490.

I have been browsing through the forum and this led me to look in my installed programs list and noticed that there is no indication of any service pack. (I might be mistaken but I thought service pack updates used to be there). Should I, among other things, reinstall the service pack, and if so, how?

I am really in need of a permanent fix for these recurring problems as I feel my pc is vulnerable. It has also slowed substantially in recent months. Please note, too that I am running Avast Free Antivirus.

I will be grateful for any assistance.

Hi Layback Bear

I've completed the tutorial but the zip file is all of 58.5 MB. Since the limit is 8 MB, could you guide me as to how to proceed? While I await that instruction, the error code I got after updating was 80073712.

Thank you much.

Just wait for one of our experts to drop by and they will give you instructions.

Because I'm no expert in this field all I wanted to do is point you in the proper direction.

See if this helps. Some instruction from one of our experts.

If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

Thank you for your advice and help.

However, it seem I'll just have to wait on you experts because I followed the instructions in the quote you posted, but the zip files are still too large. Apart from the CbsPersist files, there is a CBS.log file that which, when compressed, is still much larger than the 8 MB.

If you can upload to OneDrive or Dropbox and post a link that would work.

Hey there NoelDP.

Just that gentle reminder:axe:... and I've chosen not to shout, as you suggested :)
Anyhow, I am looking forward to, and will be grateful for, your assistance. Thanks!

I've uploaded a file - shlaa.zip - to my OneDrive at Noel's OneDrive
Please download and save it.
Right-click on the downloaded file, and select Extract all…
Extract to the default location - which will create a new folder shlaa in the same place.
Open this folder - there should be two folders inside it (Manifests, and Packages)

Copy the content of the Packages folder to the folder
C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Servicing\Packages

And the content of the manifests folder (.manifest files) into this folder:

C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Winsxs\Manifests

Now run the CheckSUR tool again (it may take a while)

Post the new CheckSUR.log file, and the CheckSUR.persist.log file.

Also run a new SFC /SCANNOW, and post the new log file - I need to see that before we can do the rest of the file repairs.

See how Windows Update behaves now - do a Check for Updates, and attempt to install ONLY the oldest found update - what happens?
If it goes in OK, try the rest.

Hi NoelDP!

Thank you so much for solving the problem I was experiencing with the updates. From the time I copied the contents of the Manifest and Packages folders and followed the other instructions you gave, I realise I wasn't getting the error at the bottom right of my monitor again.

I just check for updates as you suggested. Four (4) were successfully installed. However, there has been one (1) optional update that has refused to install since Sept., 2010 (nVidia - Display - NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE nForce 430). Anyhow I will not let that bother me. The most important things are fine. Thanks a million again!

I'd hide that NVidia update - go to the manufacturer's website and download the latest one from there, instead.

It looks as if there should still be some problems, as there are payload file errors (which CheckSUR can find, but never fix)

Please run SFC /SCANNOW again, and post the latest CBS.log file, and I'll see what I can do about them.

I've uploaded a file - shlab.zip - to my OneDrive at Noel's OneDrive
Please download and save it.

Right-click on the saved file and select Extract all...
Change the target to C:\ and click on Extract
Close all windows (it would be a good idea to print these instructions!)

Now reboot to the Repair Environment - as soon as the machine restarts, start tapping F8 - this should bring up the Advanced Boot Menu, at the top of which should be the option 'Repair my Computer'
Pick that
You'll have to log in with your username and password.

Pick the option to use a Command Prompt
At the prompt type
DIR C:\shlab
hit the enter key - if you get a 'Not Found' error try
DIR D:\shlab
or
DIR E:\shlab

The drive letter in use when you find the folder will need to be substituted (for<drive>) into the following command...

XCOPY <drive>:\shlab <drive>:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h

(e.g. XCOPY P:\wfire P:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h )

run the command (it should take almost no time) and when the prompt returns, type
EXIT
and hit the Enter key to exit Command Prompt - reboot to Normal Mode Windows.

Now run SFC /SCANNOW in an Elevated Command Prompt
then reboot and upload the new CBS.log file to your reply

Hi NoelDP

I started your most recent set of instructions but when I reached the 'Repair My Computer' screen, I am being asked for the windows installation disc, which I do not have.

What do I do next, or have I gotten the instructions wrong?

Awaiting your response.
