Solved MBR error on reinstalling Win7 to clean HD

.....
Security Update for .NET Framework 3.5.1
I have 4.5.1 installed, so if I MUST have this, too, let me know. Hidden for now.

Security Update for .NET Framework 3.5.1
Security Update for Windows KB2479943
Security Update for Windows KB2631813
Security Update for Windows KB 2798162
.....
Unless I am given specific direction with regard to the above 4 updates, I'm moving on.
.....
Attached is what is currently installed on this "clean" drive. What should I lay on next?
Microsoft Security Essentials? (MSE)
Microsoft Office Suite?
My Canon printer?

Maybe I wasn't clear enough (it happens), but take another read of post# 117 which addresses the four troublesome WU

Resolve the WUs first (perhaps too late to be first :)) then build up your system slowly, a few necessary apps at a time. Leave the fun stuff for later after you know your system is running well.

I would install any security updates unless you want to leave a hole in your system for malware to tunnel in.
Speaking of malware, - your list of things to install next = MSE, then your choice (printer or MSO shouldn't matter).

If you get any errors in SFC or SURT (post# 117) post the logs (C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\) - you'll have to put them in a compressed folder (zip) to post them. Also note that SFC might require more than one pass/run to fix some errors - it is advisable to restart between each pass/run.

If you don't get any errors, post that information too - thanks

OK, guys, 2 questions:
On the failed updates, why should I persist in installing patches on items that are not installed? Could that not be the reason they don't install? Can't find what to patch? Too stupid a question?

And, Greg, is there a reason you don't want me to work with ASUS tech support? I'll try it your way and try to find that driver myself, but I do have an open case with them on this very issue. Just asking...

I'm going out of town for a wedding and will return Monday afternoon, so I'll resume my efforts then.
Thank you all so much.

You never really know how services and dlls are used by other software. It is not possible to write a description that answers every question for an update - so MS posts the most common.

If your system didn't need it, it would not be offered. WU knows more than I do, so I trust that if it offers something, I let it install (except Silverlight or Bing :))

There are a myriad of reasons why a WU won't install. The answer might be found by running the utilities I suggested.

I don't see where Greg said he didn't want you to work with ASUS support - where did that come from?

What driver are you looking for? The chipset...SMbus.

They're easy to find if you look in the right place. Based this on your system specs mobo

But please ONLY install missing or flagged devices.

Don't think "Hey.... that's shiny and newer.... I'll get that one too" :)

ONLY the ones that are not installed or are flagged in DevMgr.

Enjoy the wedding.

Thank you all so much.

I only gave you some things to try first. Asus may lean on you to install their crap. Suit yourself. Their Support is far below the quality of ours but is valuable mainly for hardware replacement during warranty. You can run tough issues by them because even a stopped clock is right twice a day.

What exactly are you trying to install that needs patching. I told you days ago to forget about Framework updates until their parent is installed

Do those Net Framework Updates have their parent Framework installed in Control Panel?

Michael, Windows 7 is a driver-complete OS in the installer and via Windows Updates. Faulty updates are one in a million.

In WIndows 8 users don't even participate with drivers which is done in the background, using advances developed in Win7. Would you force drivers on that OS?

You're quick. I deleted my post very shortly after making it (I thought what's the point). But now you've raised it...
I've had the one in a million when it comes to Nvidia graphics drivers - maybe I should buy a lottery ticket.
Also, are you saying that you don't recommend the ASUS site downloads for one of its motherboards??? I do.

I've had some Gurus here I really respect say that builders shouldn't rely on the chipset given by Win7 but install their mobo's straight away. Since I work mostly with Factory OEM my view may be skewed a bit. But it doesn't take me long when chipset components are missing or I see deficiencies to grab the OEM's chipset. I have seen it cause consumers problems, though, when they went to the mobo chipset for factory OEM rather than the PC maker's which can be modded.

Supposedly MS vets all of these, and I confess I was wowed by a tour I had at my first MVP Global Summit of their hardware lab where this is handled. They say they are committed to testing every hardware driver to decide if they should be loaded into Windows Update. It seems to have worked for the most part but there are still many who don't want to let go of the XP methods and I can at times understand why. So I don't want to parrot the company line but also want to embrace the future which is clear by the way Windows 8 handles drivers which is the least of its worries.

I am back! Sorry for lengthy delay, but returned home to 108 degrees and immediately left for the hills, literally. Heat wave has broken; now a balmy 100. Makes a difference...

Anyway, today I logged in for the first time since 6/26 and found 11 updates awaiting. All installed successfully! I love this! I mean, you have no idea

Next, I downloaded and installed MSE -- and performed a full (not quick) scan.
Next, I installed Office 2010, which immediately triggered numerous updates, all installed successfully.

To me, this was a VERY successful day! Please may it hold ever thus.

Very good news Bean.

See how the machine runs for a few days to a week and if things are still good could you mark your thread solved?
(maybe the machine can go with you to the 'hills' next time :) 108 degrees very hot!)

Thanks, Bill! I live at the base of the foothills of the Sierra Nevada (or as the natives refer to it: The Mountain), and it would be anathema to bring anything other than music up there! GLAD to leave this machine at home!

Woke up to 39 more updates -- all installed successfully. Nirvana.
Installed my wireless printer, also successfully. Gonna let this recipe stew for a week without adding anything else.
I'll check in with you then, and finalize the case.
Cannot wait!

That sounds really nice. I didn't mean to bring the machine and use it - just to let it cool down too :D

When you say music, you mean instruments, not electronics - right!

As long as things are going smoothly, you can keep doing WU - there's over 100 after SP1 and it might take you months to get them all waiting a week in between (and then there will of course be the ones the accumulated in those months).

Do the updates in small batches and if there is an issue - stop and ask.

I hope you don't have any major problems and I don't expect any. There are a few that you might want to hold off on though...

.NET 4.0 .NET 4.5 are big and they have to rebind a lot of things - so they take a while.
IE 10 and IE 11 might cause some issue - I would stay on IE 9 until most of everything else gets updated.

Do hold off installing any non-essential software. When your system is completely up-to-date and stable, make a system image.

Your call, I understand your caution.

Bill

I wasn't sure if IE 11 was already installed, so that was more of a precaution than a dire warning.

If things are ok on IE 11, leave it alone. My experience was during the transition (IE9 -> IE 10 -> IE 11). MS made some hefty changes along the way, I'm sure they straightened it out (WU offers what is needed now, not the same as before during the transition period).

There are a few WUs that make it very stable. Wait until you finish the WU offers before making a decision on whether or not to roll back IE.
If you experience issues with IE 11 there is a tutorial that walks you through backing down to IE 10.
Sorry if I alarmed you.

If it's working, don't muck around - that's pretty much my mantra for computers. Of course I don't listen to my own advice and end up breaking something ;).
