When one shuts down the computer, many times a message shows up saying a program is still open and a question if you want to force shutdown or cancel (i think).
The message never stays long enough to even fully read the message, but I would like the option to control that.

How to I extend the time of the message or perhaps actually wait for me to decide?

As far as I know, there is no option to do what you are asking...If it is an application hanging up, the option to force a restart will pause until you select a forced restart, otherwise there will be little or no delay in shutting down automatically... Hope this helps...

I think that everyone gets that message, once in a while; I know that I have. Your rendition of the message is basically what you would see if you had additional time to read it. As Tews said it usually means that another program has to close prior to the closing of the program that you are currently using. The next time that it happens you can try right clicking on the taskbar and bring up the task manager, to see what is running, but then, again, if you do not have enough time to read the message there will probably not be enough time to bring up the task manger. Although, I cannot give you a method to increase the length of time that you see the message, I can give you some hints on how to reduce the number of times that it is seen, keep your computer well maintained; run disc clean, defrag, disc scan, etc. Good Luck

I think it is either some indexing feature holding it up, or perhaps Norton.
From the event log there are notes on the "Gatherer" being forceably terminated.

Either way, it never stops long enough for me to even try to react to it.

The choice given is to wait, or to shut down the program that is still running. There was no need to react, the running program completed its procedure and you shut down. This is a good thing.

Hello MiaAccess, welcome to Seven Forums!

You may cause long term problems with some programs if you "force" them to close prematurely.

Hi, if you want to delay the closing down of your PC in this instance, just to see if you can tell
which program is stopping it from closing down, Try this, and don’t forget to change it back the next time you start up.

Type in regedit into the Start Search box, it will be at the top of the Start Menu page, go into the registry.
Click on the following, Hkey_Local_Machine / System /Current Control Set /Control. You then need to modify the
Wait To Kill Services Timeout. The default is 12000, so try it at 24000 and click ok then reboot.

Change it back after you do your test, I hope this helps.

Great information, worthy of rep. You have given so much good advice, however, that I have to spread the rep around before rewarding you again. Truly great information.
