Microsoft Security Essentials: Upgrade

I've been running MSE 2 beta when I see they just updated version 1. Now what to do? 2 beta has been working well but now I wonder if I'm better protected with the updated v1 or the older 2 beta...

The public version of Microsoft Security Essentials and the Ongoing beta verison of it both get the same definition updates. So you are not at more risk with the ongoing beta.

v2 older ?
is it ?

oops, i thought that v2 was newer than v1....;)

MSE v2:
Security Essentials Version: 2.0.375.0
Antimalware Client Version: 3.0.6509.0
Engine Version: 1.1.6201.0
Antivirus definition: 1.91.1759.0
Antispyware definition: 1.91.1759.0

actually, as you can see v2 has a newer version of the Antimalware Client than v1...
and it´s the same definition files as v1.

have you never looked under settings, realtime protection ?
v2-beta also offers MORE protection than v1, take a look at the last option:
"Enable network protection against exploits of known vulnerabilities".

the only "risk" is that a beta might cause problems...
anyway, i´ve been running v2-beta together with EAM since it was released, and i haven´t noticed any "real" problems at all,
the only thing i´ve seen is that the taskbar-icon is sometimes missing, but that also happens with v1.

Hi Hackerman1,

The new version 1 just came out this week. The 2 beta I had installed was from a couple of months ago if I remember right. I know the 2 beta does do some thing more than version 1 but one thing it doesn't have is a command line scanner capability.

I have my security set up similar to yours except I used Avast 5 free as my real time scanner and use MSE on demand. I have written a script and converted it to a scr screensaver that runs MSE quick scan and then my preferred screensaver.

yes, MSE v2-beta was released some time ago, but it´s engine etc. has been updated since then, if i remember correctly there was an update not long ago.

MSE has a "command line scanner" !
open a command shell & run "MpCmdRun.exe /?", there is a lot of options available....

i have both MSE & EAM with realtime-protection.

Interesting. Maybe I need to try a reinstall of 2 beta. I looked in that path and neither the .exe or the .dll existed in 2 beta as they do in v1.

i looked at your system specs, you are running W7-64.
maybe it´s somewhere else on a 64-bit system ?

That was it! I re-upgraded to version 2 beta and did a search for MpCmdRun.exe. Its default path in x64 is C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Client\AntiMalware\. I re-wrote my script, re-compiled into a screensaver and it now works fine. Sometimes we need to be prodded to take that one more step! THANKS!

where did you look for it ?
is it located somewhere else in v1 ?

that screensaver-script sounds interesting, could you please post it ?
but, i suggest you create a new thread.

thanks for the rep. !

In version 1 MY default install path was: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Essentials\

Here is the script:

@echo off
"c:\program files\microsoft security client\Antimalware\MPCMDRUN.EXE" -Scan -1
D:\Utility\aquarium.scr /s
rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation
exit

I then compiled the .bat to a .exe and changed the .exe extension to .scr

Works great! :D

interesting, i normally don´t use a screensaver because i´ve had some interference on a scanner (radio),
whenever i turn off the screen.
yes, i know it´s weird....

but now the interfence is gone, so i was thinking about starting using a screensaver, and the idea of doing a scan when the system is idle isn´t bad.

i saw something similar somewhere, could have been yesterday, someone using a screensaver-script for some antivirus, could have been MSE.

I actually looked in C:\Microsoft Security Client\ I just needed to look down one more subdirectory (\antimalware) to find it!

I had found an MSE screensaver here:

Automatically Scan Your PC With Microsoft Security Essentials When System Is Idle

but had a problem with it. The only way I could run this on either of my x64 machines was to completely turn off UAC. I didn't like that so I set out and created my own. I have a utility that converts .bat or .cmd files to .exe's. All you have to do is change the exe extension to .scr and you have a screensaver! Works well now and I can keep my UAC on.
