I installed the trial of MS Office 2007 and Excel works but I can't get Word to work. I click on an old XP word document and say "open with" and do a browse and go to winword.exe in Office12 which is under the program files of (x86) and it does not make the connection but I can open up a New Word document in 2007 then go to open and then I can open up any old word document. I just can't make all my XP documents hook into Word 2007. Any suggestion what I might try?

try this

Try not browsing to the winword.exe, you are offered different programs in the "open with" dialog page. Just scroll down and choose "word". if it works then open again and choose "Always open with word option".

Maybe I didn't get your post right, but have you tried doubleclicking on it?

If yes, and it didn't work go to controlpanel => programs, find office and do a repair install.

Still don't work. I uninstalled Office all together downloaded Home and student 2007 office trial and installed it and it works just fine except word doesn't work. I did a convert, repair, you name it I did it I think. I believe this is a easy fix I just don't know what it is. When I try and "open With" Word is not there so I go to browse and I have to enter the (x86 program files) and when I go to winword and double click or open it don't work. I can open a new word with no problem and can even open any old word doc but there is no connection (forgot the term) to my old word docs.

I did a convert, repair, you name it I did it I think. re-boot many times. I believe this is a easy fix I just don't know what it is. As I said in my post there isn't any Word. I can manualy fix this problem if I want to convert each of my 300 documents one at a time by "Open" then select the document which will open up in Word 2007 and save as the default word. It saves my document as .doc and .docx so I save in both formates which is nice. But I don't want to do all 300 of them one at a time or else I have too. At least there is a fix to this problem. However I would rather drive my car to the next town instead of walking.

Go to Chose default program...
Word should be there...
If it isn't...
Browse for it...
Try in Program files (no program files (x86)
That worked for me...
I don't know any other solution

Do this it should work:

If all your old Office docs have a same extension and you are sure you always want to open these files with Word, this should work. If you have several different file extensions, it would be better to change them so these 300 files use only one file extension.

This video shows how to assign a new filetype with Word.

Here's how to check / change file extension. Please be careful with extensions, you can seriously harm your system if you change extension of known system and application files!

- Go to Control Panel > Folder Options > View
- Uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types"
- Apply

After changing extensions you need to change, please remember to check the above mentioned checkbox. It is not recommended to have this option unchecked except when needed.

This is what I have done
Double click on an XP Document which has no association (blank icon)
It auto goes to "Open With" and there is no Word
Click other Documents and still no word
Click Browse
It auto goes to program files which in Microsoft Office it has no files, just folders
I click on C:\Windows and go to program files (x86) where winword.exe is at
I double click on winword.exe and it does not appear in "Open With"
I go back and click on winword.exe and click "open" and still not in "Open With"

Is there something I miss?
I did an association after installing but that didn't help

One thing to check when browsing for an application to open a file with is there should be an option to "always use this program to open files of this type" or similar.

Ensure that this is selected, and the application should then appear on subsequent open with ....

If a file doesn't have an extension, Windows 7 can not open it because it don't know which application should be used to open file. Windows also doesn't show "open with" option in context (right click) menu.

You have to rename these files so that the name of each file includes an extension. If your files were created with an earlier version of Office, I recommend you use an extension automatically associated with Word. I would simply use extension .doc

If the "open with ..." is not appearing you could try a Shift - Right Click and then follow the normal procedure for changing an association

Update - Does not seem to work any more for blank file-types :(:o

The bottem line is how do I get winword.exe into the "open With" There has to be a back door. Where is "Open With" located and then I can just drop the winword.exe into it.

Open with is apearing
I can't change the .doc into .docx because it won't work. I have to use word to do that
always use this program to open files of this type is check

A couple of idea's

I believe the term you are looking for is "Associations". so try this to set the association:

link your doc files to Word 2007 in Folder Options. Open Control Panel, go to > Default Programs >Set Associations. scroll down the list till you see the DOC extension, click on it then click on the Change button. You will be given a list of programs to choose from, if you can't find Word click on Browse to find it. After this click on OK then on Close. You should then be able to load any DOC file into Word 2007 by double clicking on it.

If this doesn't work you can try deleting your "normal.dotm" or "normal.dot", as this template can get corrupted, but this is always worth trying as a last resort.

I really don't know how to explain this to you! If a file has an extension .doc or any other extension assigned to Word, Word can open it. If it has some other extension, you choose Open With, then Word from the list presented.

If Word is not shown, you click Browse and find yourself to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OfficeXX (XX = 12, 13 or 14 depending of your Office version), there you find and click winword and Open. After that you just click OK, and Word opens your file.

I really can not understand what is so difficult here? In this thread you find everything you need to know to open documents from earlier version of Office with a new Office.

As I explain is past post "It does not work", it is "Program files (x86)" becaue I have Windows 7 - 64 bit. I'm wondering if it's the 64 bit that is giving me this problem? It is Office 2007. Bottem line Winword.exe will not go into "OPEN WITH"
